Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Robin Weiss. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Robin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
For a while I was set on the name of my business, ‘Kool F-ing Kugels.’ This is the name I called it and promoted it as since its inception, but as time went on it didn’t feel right and it wasn’t how I envisioned my brand. I felt hesitation to share the name and to create a logo and that’s when I knew it needed to be changed. The name I ultimately chose is ‘Kugelahs’, which came upon me all of a sudden, literally in my dreams, and I was set on that name ever since. it reflects my upbringing and what I want to convey through my kugels. Growing up in an Ashkenazi jewish family, we always used the term of endearment, ‘Bubelah’. It’s a yiddish word that translates to sweetie. It creates a sense of nostalgia and warmth. I always knew when things were tough my family called me bubelah and always ensured me that everything would be ok. Kugelahs was inspired by this feeling and word. My hope is that when someone sees the name and eats my kugel they are immediately overcome with a sense of safety and feel at home.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always loved to entertain and share my passions with others. Every year on the jewish new year, I make sweet noodle kugel to share with family and friends. When my brother highly complimented my kugel one year, I was inspired to create a kugel brand, which I noticed was not something that others were creating. This brand represents who I am and where I come from. It was inspired by my family who encourage me to follow my dreams every day.
I believe my sales model and how I keep the creativity within my brand going sets me a part. I am a comedian and I co-host and co-produce a monthly comedy show with my friend. I am able to sell and promote my kugels at these shows and because I have a new flavor that drops every month it keeps my clients on their toes and excited for what the next month may bring.
Kugelahs enables me to bring all my passions together, entertaining, community, and creativity.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I’ve had two ways of how I was able to initially launch my business. The first way, I was fortunate enough to be a part of an organization that provided me funding to put on events that have a Jewish focus. I am also a comedian and my dream was to put on a Jewish comedy show to highlight the comedy friends I have made through the community and also to launch my kugel flavors to the community I have built in NYC. The event was funded by the organization and gave me the opportunity to create my flavors and to see if the 70 people who came to my show would enjoy them. I got an overwhelming response of positive reviews of my kugel as well as the show. Which leads me to my second way I was able to start my business. Since that show I have been hosting monthly comedy shows where I sell my kugels as well. Through the sales at my show I am able to fund the business and continue what I love doing the most, which is performing comedy and selling kugels.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Currently my comedy show is the best source of new clients and well as selling a monthly flavor. Since my main sales are at the show and we get many new attendees every month I am able to introduce Kugelahs to many people as well as keep my current clients engaged by dropping a new flavor every month.
