We were lucky to catch up with Robin Speth recently and have shared our conversation below.
Robin, appreciate you joining us today. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
When I brought home my very first Chrysalis Captivator sculpture to show my roommate, he held it for a little while, laughed, and said “You can die now”. Which on the one hand is super morbid and probably not how he meant to convey the message behind that but I am very grateful he said that. For me, it was a confirmation that I had contributed something worthwhile to world of art.
Robin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My work describes change over time. Visually it flows, vibrates, and morphs from one shape to the next forming a near infinite range of subjects. I find the subject of change, growth, and evolution, incredibly fascinating because it is a phenomenon that we all experience but never get to see. We wake up and were older, or the flowers in the yard have opened. We never get to see those moments in-between.
I work within the mediums of Airbrush painting, Drawing, and 3D printed sculpture. These allow me to create work relatively quickly. This is important because I feel that if a piece is labored on for too long, it looses the magic and energy behind it.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Every once in a while you get to see someone connect with your work. It will genuinely move them and they’re not just being nice. That’s really cool and makes you feel like you’re doing something useful.
Also, the rush of bringing something to life within a canvas is incredible and makes you, the creator feel alive as well.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I would like to have a painting, drawing, or sculpture in the Detroit Institute of Arts some day. That museum was very formative in my early stages as an artist as it allowed me access to some of the worlds greatest treasures. I can think of no greater honor than having my work displayed there.
