We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Robin Murphy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Robin below.
Robin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
When I first started thinking about starting a permanent jewelry business, I was making a list of all things that had to do with permanent jewelry. Sparked was on the listed and I loved it. It was easy to say and I thought it would be cute to have the hashtag #getsparkedgreenville. When I pitched the name to my husband he loved it so it stuck. I couldn’t find anyone else using it in the permanent jewelry space so I filed paperwork to name my business Sparked. Sparked was the first established permanent jewelry business in Greenville.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Robin Murphy and I am the owner of Sparked Permanent Jewelry. Believe it or not saw a TikTok about permanent jewelry and was obsessed. My wrist is tiny so I never wore bracelets. The thought of a custom sized bracelet with no clasp to fool with had me sold. I knew I had to have one but I could not find anyone within 2 hours of us that provided permanent jewelry. At the time I had a part time job so I pitched it to my husband what if I started a permanent jewelry business. He did some research and said let’s go for it. I had zero knowledge of how to start a business much less how to do permanent jewelry. When I started there was very little out there on how to do it and no one around that could help me, so I had to teach myself. I created Sparked from the ground up and have since added an employee. We create timeless bracelets, necklaces and anklets with no clasp. They can be personalized with connectors to suit your style. We schedule pop ups, vendor markets and private parties. Our most favorite types of events are pop ups in boutiques or salons. We love bringing foot traffic into small businesses that may also help boost the sales & recognition of the host salon or boutique.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
When I first started instagram/Facebook I went and followed all the boutiques and salons I could think of. That really didn’t get me many followers but it did generate some. Shortly afterwards, I was able to schedule my first pop-up. I then made a graphic to which they also shared it and the followers started to grow. From that initial pop up other boutiques began to ask me to come in. Every time I had a pop up I created graphics which were shared with their followers. Every new pop up came new followers. I then began to get creative with my graphics by adding surveys, educational & informative content along with photos of inventory and work. Some of the graphics that garnered the most attention came in the form of ‘get to know me’ posts.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
When I started Sparked in February 2022 I was a part time insurance agent. I was working pop ups & vendor markets at night and on weekends. I was working both from February-August. In August (2022) I was invited to a boutique in Clemson on a Thursday night. When I started I had a line of more that 30. I knew I could not weld that many in the allotted time. I did end up staying an hour late and requested to come back the next day so those that didn’t get a bracelet had a chance to come back. In order to go back I had to call into work the next day. This was when I new my job as an insurance agent was interfering with growing my own business. So the next Monday I put in my two weeks notice and decided to dedicate all my time to Sparked.
