We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Robin Kay a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Robin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
My dermatologist asked if I wanted to do a commercial in Miami when I was in college and I said yes. The client sent a limo to pick me up and take me to Miami for a few days to shoot a cosmetic commercial. I had so much fun and cannot believe I got paid for this type of work. That was a unique experience and not what is normal in the industry. It’s a lot more of a grind and chasing after the work. But I didn’t know how to get started in the industry and I was so far away from Miami. It would’ve been very difficult to do castings and connect with agents when I was an hour and a half away. This was the days of beepers and home phones so putting yourself on video was not the norm. I waited until I got out of college to figure out how that process would work. I connected with people I knew in the industry and they helped me figure out my way. I was very unsure of myself and didn’t think I had the look of a model. But I had a friend who was a similar build and height who worked full-time in the industry and she helped me. I prayed for direction as I didn’t know if this was going to be my career path. The first day I walked into Michelle Pomier (Wilhemina) agency they sent me on a model casting and I booked it. I was forever hooked. That is not normal to book something right away, but I think I needed that encouragement and divine confidence to know that I was heading in the right direction. That was 25 years ago and my career has expanded into television hosting and social media content creation.
Robin , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Robin, a model and TV host, and video producer turned social media content strategist, and I help brands create obsession-worthy content that drives real engagement. With 25 years of experience in production, I’ve mastered the art of storytelling, and over the past year, I’ve transitioned into producing social media content creation—where strategy meets creativity.
I specialize in short-form videos that hook audiences within seconds, keep them watching, and most importantly—convert. Whether it’s a beauty brand, a local restaurant, or a personal brand, I craft content that makes people stop scrolling and take action.
What sets me apart? I don’t just create content; I create content that works and have a firm belief in great customer service. I also work on retainers so I love developing long-term relationships with my clients. I also have a wide background of work experience in different industries that adds depth to project knowledge.
What I’m most proud of? Making those who are invisible be seen in the marketplace.
If you’re ready to make your brand obsession-worthy, let’s create something unforgettable. 🚀
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part about being a social media content creator and on-camera personality is seeing how strategic, well-crafted content can transform and bring a brand or product to life. I love the challenge of turning a simple idea into a scroll-stopping video that not only grabs attention. The best part? Being a part of a team moving in the same direction and bringing a brand to life through television and social media. When a video I create helps a business get more customers, boosts a product’s visibility, or positions someone as a leader in their industry—that’s what makes it all worth it. Content isn’t just about authenticly highlighting a brand and I thrive on making that happen. 🚀
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Absolutely. I think one thing non-creatives struggle to understand is that content creation isn’t just “making videos” or “posting online”—it’s a strategic, layered process that requires constant adaptation. People see the final product, but they don’t see the hours spent brainstorming hooks, analyzing trends, scripting, filming, editing, testing, wardrobe selection, and refining. I have spent years developing an eye for what is appealing and also what might be distracting for the viewer.
Creativity isn’t just about inspiration; it’s about discipline and problem-solving. Sometimes, the best-performing content isn’t what I love most—it’s what speaks to the audience, and figuring that out takes experience, data, and intuition.
Sometimes clients will be very detailed on what they want and others will just invite me to highlight their business or product with no directions, so it is up to me to create the most compelling story for them.
Also, the pressure to constantly create, and stay relevant, is real. At the end of the day, synergy happens when creativity meets strategy—and that’s what turns content into impact.
