We recently connected with Robin Dodd and have shared our conversation below.
Robin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
Being a 35 year old woman and just completing cosmetologist school and state board, is a wonderful feeling. It feels great because I didn’t give up and my children are my biggest motivation but as I look back I had this opportunity back when I was 23 when my auntie paid for my admission at MATC in Milwaukee, WI. At that moment I felt like it wasn’t for me anymore even though I stayed doing my hair at the age of 9 and then leading to do family and some friends hair as well.. I didn’t see what I see now and ran from the opportunity but if I would’ve started back then I’ll probably have my own salon and the ability to rent out chairs/booth to others. I also feel I’ll be well known by now with an excessive amount of clients. Giving me this time to grow and realize my opportunities I also feel this is the right time for me and I’m putting everything in it, it’s never too late to live your dream. My family recognized it for me then but now I see it..
Robin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
In 2021 I decided to sign up for cosmetology school at Health and Style. I was 34 and just had my 5th child 3 months prior to signing up for school. My motivation was knowing that I wanted to show my kids that it is possible and never give up on your dream. What makes me different from others is simply me being me, I have a great personality and great at listening. Listening to my clients and understanding their wants and needs when it comes to their hair is my main concern. I’m so excited to be opening my own suite at the end of March.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Honesty social media plays a big part of me gaining loyal clients.. I pay on IG, FB, and Tik Tok. Showing your work and constantly posting different hairstyles helps the ppl to learn what I’m capable of when it comes to hair. Another one will always be word of mouth I stay with business cards on me and answering questions. And if your clients are always satisfied it helps bring in more clientele.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I build my clients on social media by making videos from start to finish, a lot of ppl want to see the hair texture and what was able to be done with it. I also do reels which reaches more ppl outside of me friend list and helps me to gain more followers and shares.
