We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Robin Bouricius a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Robin, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I never seriously think about going back. While I sometimes miss the social dynamic of a conventional workspace, and I appreciate the illusion of stability in a paycheck, I was laid off during the Covid economy. I was propelled to make a change. Necessity is the mother of invention. It was worth it! I like doing my own thing– I like the freedom of expressing my vision; financially, I am much better compensated for my time and talent.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My photography journey began with landscape photography, stemming from my love of nature, travel and camping–from a quiet place in the wilderness. Later, while training for my commercial pilot’s license, I took-up aerial photography as away to document the unique perspective that a small plane gifts you. Aerial photography enables me to share my bird’s eye view with clients.
In 2020, I launched my company, Robin Lucas Photography. It seemed like the right time to invest in my vision and to work independently. My photography has expanded to include portraiture, architectural and product photography.
I’m proud of the diverse media services that I offer today, including real estate, drone stills and video, virtual tours, fine-art landscape and high-altitude aerial photographs shot from an airplane. The quality of my work is in the balance of technical skills and creative expression.
I will continue to seek remote areas and rare moments in nature which often require being at the trail by 3:30 a.m. or tent-camping in zero degree temperatures in the desert. I will also continue to enjoy bringing someone’s dream home to light and capturing the iconic beauty in a commercial property.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients is existing clients’ satisfaction and referrals. I ran some digital ads initially, but ultimately it was customer satisfaction, repeat clients and professional recommendations that have exponentially grown my clientele and revenue.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Dependability and flexibility. I make myself available to clients’ scheduling needs and special requests. Providing a consistent quality product, attention to detail and meeting production and marketing deadlines.
