We recently connected with Robin Ayers and have shared our conversation below.
Robin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I’ve always felt natural at having conversation with different people from all walks of life. My true skill is listening when people share their stories. Turning into a career, however, is the real key. I did not go to a traditional college and certainly did not acquire any degrees in communication or journalism. I was lucky enough to have met someone who believed in me.
A stranger became a friend of mine and this man has been an executive in film and television for years. One day, a decade ago, he reached out to me and asked if I could step in and interview a well-known celebrity. I had never interviewed anyone before. A person of status, no less, but I said “yes,” and the rest was history. That was the onset of become crystal clear of what I wanted to do as a career.
Learning how to use this to pave my way into a career was trial and error. It was also a lot of saying “yes” to opportunities that came my way, even if it was an unpaid gig. Since I hadn’t had any traditional training on interviewing, I studied a lot of people while I committed to getting better.
During my journey, I also learned to write as a professional. I wish I would’ve started that path a bit earlier, because it would help forge a path for many other things I wanted to be involved in as a journalist.
Robin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Up until two years ago, I considered myself an entertainment correspondent. I interviewed actors, creatives and others on the red carpet during premieres. I also interviewed for press junkets for movies set to come out. As of two years ago, I added radio host to my title. I host a daily talk radio show on KBLA 1580 where I bring entertainment news, trending topics and interviews to my listeners Monday through Friday.
I got into this industry by chance when a friend asked me to interview R&B legend Keith Sweat, and NBA legend and businessman, Magic Johnson. It was after those interviews that I realized I had the natural gift and the desire to continue that as a career. I continued to ask around, “who can I interview?” Many people rose to the occasion and indulged me. Brandy Norwood, MC Lyte, Torrei Hart and many others chose to help me get started on my career path.
Currently, my goal is to highlight industry stories, but extrapolate meaningful, noteworthy discussion from it. I’ve never had a knack for salacious gossip, so I always stayed true to my core of inspirational content. I care deeply about the Black community and do my best to have conversations around what we can do to move our community forward as a whole instead of as separatists.
I’ve written and published two books as well. The first is ideal for people who believe in the power of manifesting the life you want. I use my own story to showcase the power in our thoughts and words that we speak over our lives to overcome even the toughest obstacles in life. The second book is more about business gems that people can pick up. These are tips that I have learned over many years that would entrepreneurs who are just getting started in business.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Last year (2023) I battled a health crisis when I was diagnosed with Leiomyosarcoma. Every day, through all of the pain I showed up for my radio show daily. While I do believe in listening to your body (and I did), I also believe that we need to pull through for people that rely on us.
I was raised with a certain level of discipline that is hard for me to shake, even in the face of adversity.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
As a kid I never knew there would be ample opportunity to use the gifts I was born with to have a career. It’s inspiring to see so many other people use their creative ideas and courage to step out and make a living from it. It’s so rewarding to be recognized for being able to bring stories of everyday people to life.
