We recently connected with Roberto Sanchez and have shared our conversation below.
Roberto , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
“Since my childhood, I have felt a strong inclination towards the arts. Drawing and exploring creativity through sculptures, crafts, and various forms always captured my interest. During my adolescence, I had the opportunity to enter an art school in Cuba. It was there that I really began my journey in visual arts.
Throughout my years of study, I became convinced that art was the path I wanted to take in my professional life. That’s when I started experimenting with different supports and materials, which in my early artistic stage were my medium of expression until I discovered the art of tattooing.
I remember flipping through some books when I stumbled upon tattoo magazines. In them, I could appreciate what could be achieved on a living canvas like skin; my mind exploded, and from that moment a new universe of creation opened up for me.
It was then, from 2014, that I decided to professionally dedicate myself to the art of tattooing. Although my beginnings were challenging, I never saw it as impossible. The passion for transferring onto skin what I could achieve on canvases and cardboards was what drove me in this challenge of decorating the human body, narrating stories through figures and shapes.”
Roberto , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
• How did I get into the tattoo industry?
My journey into the tattoo industry began in art school. I had a drawing teacher who gave me the initial steps in how to do a tattoo and the materials that could be used. In those early days, I lacked the proper resources and had to improvise, creating my own tattoo machines in a craft and empirical way. Over the years, when I decided to dedicate myself professionally to tattooing, I had the opportunity to obtain better materials to develop myself in this profession, which provided a great evolution in my work.
This journey started in Venezuela around 2014 when, studying more about this art, I discovered the work of internationally renowned tattoo artists. Their work deeply inspired me, and it was then that I knew for sure that tattooing was the direction I wanted to follow in my professional career.
• What creative work do you offer?
As a plastic artist and tattoo artist, I have a decade of professional experience in the art of tattooing. I specialize in styles such as realism and surrealism, which I explore in both color and shades. I also dedicate myself to painting and drawing as a means of expression, which complements and enriches my artistic offerings. In this way, I can offer a varied range of creative work, adapting to the needs of my clients.
• What do you think sets you apart from others?
What distinguishes me in my field is my focus on creativity and my ability to develop fantastic stories inspired by my clients’ ideas. It’s a kind of magical realism that I seek to develop so that my work has a visual and conceptual signature, with surreal elements in different dimensions, using vibrant colors, lights, and well-marked contrast to give an astral feeling to my designs. Not to mention the use of good technique for an optimal result.
• What are you most proud of?
What makes me most proud are the achievements I’ve reached in these years as a professional tattoo artist, the technical and visual evolution that I have built in my artistic proposal. Also, knowing that my work serves as inspiration for other emerging artists in the tattoo world fills me with satisfaction and motivates me to continue innovating and perfecting my art.
• What are the main things you want potential clients/followers to know about your work?
Currently, I practice my profession in New York City. I dedicate many hours of study and reflection to each design I make, ensuring a high-quality result. My inspiration comes from various sources such as nature, astrology, sciences, psychology, and human behavior. This range of influences allows each of my designs to have its own essence and distinctive character. It is essential for me that my clients and followers understand the level of commitment, research, and creativity that each work I do involves.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative artist, for me, lies in the unique opportunity to express and share my view of the world through various forms of art. Whether it’s through tattooing, painting, drawing, photography, or any other visual manifestation, each work allows me to convey my perceptions and reflections on the environment around us. It’s satisfying to see how my ideas and emotions come to life.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
* In your opinion, what can society do to better support artists, creatives, and a thriving creative ecosystem?
In my opinion, there are several key ways in which society can nurture and support artists and the creative ecosystem. First, it’s crucial to have support in art schools and cultural centers.
Secondly, artistic education should be valued and strengthened in educational systems. Encouraging young people to explore and appreciate art from an early age fosters a culture of respect and appreciation for creativity.
Additionally, it’s essential to have platforms and spaces where artists can display their work and connect with the public. This includes everything from local galleries and events to online platforms.
Lastly, a society that celebrates diversity and inclusion in the arts strengthens the creative fabric. This involves supporting a wide range of artistic voices and perspectives, enriching our culture, and stimulating a deeper and more varied dialogue.
All these aspects, working together, can create an environment where artists and creatives not only survive but thrive and significantly contribute to the cultural and social fabric.
