Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Roberto Orozco. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Roberto, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’ve love to hear an interesting investment story – what was one of the best or worst investments you’ve made? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
The best investment I could have done for my career is stayed in college to complete my degree. I remember there was a time where my social media career was taking off and I saw a future where I could make a career out of it. I was in the middle of college and I was seriously considering putting it aside to pursue social media as a full time career. My parents advised to stay in school so I could have a back up but it would just take a lot of my time up. With that being said, I ended up staying but I did not really see how I could use my degree any time soon knowing my interests in makeup and social media at the time. Comes my senior year of college where I met my mentor who also studied Industrial Design at the same school I did and to my surprise, she was thriving in the beauty industry. Turns out Industrial Design is what carries innovation and newness to the beauty industry in terms of product development, I did not know this at the time but I was able to start a career designing makeup components for major beauty brands! This made my career take a whole 180 degree turn and showed there is more to the beauty industry that meets the eye of the consumer. The best investment I could have made was to stay in school and now design for the very brands I hoped to work for as a beauty influencer!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Roberto Orozco and I’m an Industrial Designer for a beauty packaging company as well as a social media influencer on the side. Ever since college, I started posting makeup looks on instagram that shortly gained traction and gave me the audience I have today. After graduating from the University of Houston, I moved to Los Angeles to start working more behind the scenes with the beauty brands that we all know and love. Working with them in such a different manner gave me a whole other insight than that of just working with them on social media. I get to see how a product is made from very early stages, all the way to the hands of influencers and consumers. How my job works is the beauty brands come to us and tell us the type of product they are coming out with and the type of packaging that they want. When they want something custom, I am in charge of 3D modeling and rendering that product to their liking and refining it until it is ready for production and send it off to our factories. Finally the packaging gets filled and it shipped to the warehouses for global supply.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
The key to social media is being consistent and genuine. That’s really it. Posting everyday for a long period of time is what got my page so much traffic and traction. By being consistent, people will know they can look forward to something of yours on a regular basis. By giving them genuine content that aligns with your values, you will be able to make real connections and be relatable to the people you want to connect to.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist/creative would have to be the amount of people’s hearts you get to touch. There are so many people out there that do not feel like they belong in a certain type of group and it is because of those unique artists that we can connect with them. Social media creates community and you get to experience unity through such artists.
