Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Roberto Hannibal. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Roberto thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
When I think of my most meaningful projects, I cannot just think of one. To me, the feedback I have gotten is what has made it meaningful. People have told me many times they appreciate that they can see themselves in my work. They see people like them in my photos. And that is huge for me. Representation is so important to me.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Roberto. I am a photographer based in Los Angeles. I love telling people that I got into photography by accident. I was actually a restaurant manager until COVID hit us. With my new found freedom (I was working up to 65hrs a week), I wanted something different. Luckily my friends asked me to help them with a music video shoot. I immediately fell in love with being behind the camera. And the rest is history. I think I am most proud of making people feel comfortable in front of the camera. I know how it feels! I get awkward in front of the camera sometimes too. I like to make sure we have a good time. If you are at ease, we will have great photos. I love all types of photography, but my favorites are creative portraits and editorials. I remember watching America’s Next Top Model as a kid and wanting to do something like that. And now I actually get to do that. I also love the complexity of the face. I like to get different types of expressions or textures around the face. I really enjoy what I do. Above all that is what I want future clients to know. When we work together, you will truly enjoy yourself and leave feeling empowered.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
There are many resources I wish I knew about early into my career. First and foremost, the greatest resource you have is your network. You need to expand your network and get to know others in your field. Second, as a photographer, there are many spaces and places you can rent or try out equipment. You do not need to buy the most expensive piece of equipment. Save where you can and be smart. Lastly, there are lots of grant opportunities for artists. Make sure you tap in.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Building an audience on social media is challenging, fun, exhausting, etc. I say this because if you are like me, you like to crunch the numbers. It is almost game. You see what people are engaged with and you try to do more of that. Luckily in Los Angeles, many people are creatives, so networking is almost expected. The “LA handshake” is when you exchange socials. I think the biggest thing in expanding your network is taking calculated risks with content.
