We recently connected with Roberto Amaral and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Roberto, thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
According to my mother, when I was 2 years old she put a crayon in my hand and encouraged me to draw. She wasn’t a professional artist but had talent when it came to pencil drawing. She was a single mother raising an only child in a lower middle class community. Back then in the early 50’s, and especially in the somewhat impoverished neighborhood where we lived, it was unusual for a child to be encouraged in the arts. Once I was old enough to understand the images I was creating my mother often bought me art materials because she knew I had talent that needed to be nurtured. During my junior high and high school years my teachers took notice of my artistic abilities and always encouraged me to pursue that avenue. I remember in my last 2 semesters of high school taking 3 different art classes at a time and my teachers taking me under their wing and pronouncing me the top artist of my graduating class. That led me to later attending college as an art major and taking my quest to the next level. I owe a great part of my development as an artist to my early childhood years and my mother’s constant encouragement to be creative.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m an abstract artist working out of my home studio in Rancho Mirage, California. Currently I’m enjoying a rotation of exhibits in local desert galleries as well as my home gallery. In 202o I relocated here from the Los Angeles area where I owned and operated a dance studio for over 40 years. I also produced, directed and performed in several of my own Flamenco dance company productions over a 50 year span. 4 years ago I decided to do a career pivot, return to my first artistic passion of painting and begin developing my current inventory of abstract art. Because of my dance background, much of my work reflects a sense of unique movement and vibrancy. My love of vivid color and textural variation is evident in most of my work. Besides my acrylic and mixed media paintings, I also create contemporary abstract digital designs. All my work can be seen online at amaralstudio.com and is available for sale as either the original painting or custom order limited edition giclee paper and canvas prints.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think the most rewarding aspect for me is to finish an art piece, feel a sense of pride in what I’ve created and hope that others will admire and respect the quality of the work which I always strive to achieve.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal right now is to eventually become a respected and sought after artist not only locally but beyond.
