We recently connected with Roberta Campbell and have shared our conversation below.
Roberta, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
After spending 30 years in the beauty industry as a hairstylist, I began evolving my career and was traveling the US while teaching Hair extension classes when my 22-year-old daughter had been hit by a car while crossing the street in a crosswalk. She suffered a traumatic brain injury among other invisible injuries. After struggling to help her heal, I became so frustrated, I began researching alternative treatments. Because her injuries were invisible, it seemed like no one understood what we were going through and kept saying, she looks fine.
After finding some relief, I knew I had to share my story and help others. I decided to write a book titled, She Looks Fine.
This was the beginning of the next chapter in my life.
I hired a mentor, Bob Proctor, and contributed to a tribute book after my mentors passing, called, My Year with Bob.
I began my career as a Keynote/motivational speaker and became a coach so that I could help others transform their lives.
As an empty Nester, I Have restarted my life and am now CEO of RC Academy.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I grew up in a very small town of a blue-collar family. Having no confidence of my own, and no direction in my life, I followed in my sister‘s footsteps and began working in a hair salon at 18. Because of my low self esteem, I wanted everyone to like me so I conformed to everyone around me.
At 23 I was married and by 40 I was divorced but blessed with two beautiful children. I was a stay at home mom for many years, and I struggled as a single mom and my life began slowly deteriorating. After my daughter was hit by a car in 2018, I hit rock bottom.
By the grace of God, I began making changes in my life and vowed to find my purpose and make a difference in this world.
I became an international best-selling author in 2023 for my book, She Looks Fine, which my daughter co-authored after her accident.
RC academy was developed in 2022 and is a reflection of my huge transformation. I empower women to embrace their authenticity and create extraordinary lives through my coaching program. As a speaker I help raise awareness for traumatic brain injuries, and inspire others through my story.
I am now over 50 but ready to live my best life! I know I have more books and collaborations in the near future, and I would love to start a foundation for traumatic brain injury survivors.
I want people to know it is never too late to make a difference in this world and with faith and persistence, anything is possible! I
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I have always loved to read and personal development has always been one of my favorite genres. Over the past couple of years, a few books have made a huge impact on me.
I began studying Neville Goddard and while I love his teachings, his books are a little difficult to understand, so I go to YouTube and listen to videos to get a better understanding.
I also enjoy anything from Louise Hay, especially you can heal your life.
I think and grow rich by Napoleon Hill is a classic in the personal development industry but very masculine. I don’t mean male or female, but masculine energy.
One book that I am re-reading right now which is having a huge impact the second time around is A return to Love by Marianne Williamson.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Over the past couple of years I have come to understand that we will always have contrast in our lives because of the law of rhythm. I have experienced much adversity in my life, as we all have. But I now know how to respond instead of react which has helped me become more adaptable in unpleasant situations.
I will never forget that day when I took a walk down to the river and begged God for help. I had been in an abusive relationship, I had no money, my daughter was still struggling to heal and on top of that, I lost my job. felt like I had lost everything but I still had so much to be grateful for. I had my health, my children, my parents, an apartment overlooking the water and somehow I knew it would be OK. I think sometimes we need to acknowledge the contrast in our life but don’t stay there. Always find something to be grateful for and you will see the beauty in your life
