We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Robert Workman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Robert below.
Robert , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Barebones Living started with a shelter and the mission to help those in need put a roof over their head and have food to eat. I started, and sold two other businesses in my life. First was Cricut.com and from the sale of that business I started full-time humanitarian work. That lead to creating Goalzero.com, filling a need for portable electrical power for poorer countries. After selling Goal Zero, I started Barebones Living, filling the need of Shelter in emergency situations. Our outreach, Tifie Humanitarian continues to be the reason behind Barebones.
Robert , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My life has been about progression and moving forward, learning new skills and applying those skills to make product that is not only needed an useful , but also beautiful I am most proud and honored to have worked with and continue to work with people who are very talented and passionate about making the world a better place to live, while helping others along the way
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One day I was in a small village in Congo, the little village was the center of our humanitarian work. The village Bwe, is a remote place outside the City of Kinshasa DRC. We were growing Casava, a basic food staple. Things were not going very well. it seemed like we were headed for total failure. The customs and perspective of the locals were so different than what I was trying to teach and I nearly quit. it seems to me that a voice spoke in my head that ” If not you who?” I took a step back and started to think that I needed a different approach. I needed to create the tools instead of teaching these good people the concepts. thus Goal Zero and Barebones living were born. Making tools that these people could use to improve their lives. The real miracle was that creating these tools not only helped the people in a poor country but created Hundreds of Jobs worldwide as our product appealed to the wealthy as well as the poor.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn that not everyone or every thing thinks and needs the same thing as I do. We all have basic needs of course. A roof over our head, water to drink, clothing to wear and food to eat, but beyond that it is all a matter of perspective and culture. A small mud hut does the same job as a castle. The only difference is the size. Happiness can be found inside the small mud hut just as easily as in a Castle
