We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Robert Wood. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Robert below.
Alright, Robert thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today
I should have opened up shop years ago. Mentally I had too much “I wish I had” and not enough of “look at what I have and see how to make it better.” I think it has been important to change my way of thinking. Negative energy brings negative. I want to do more positive things. Bringing out the positive does so much.
Robert, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I think the industry is easy to get into, it is the work and dedication which are hard. I want to be both a designer and a woodworker. It takes time to do either let alone do both. But I love it. I want to create digital content to those who do not have enough time do design it themselves. I also want to create physical representations of my or the customers design. I am still young and striving for more to get my business off the ground and no need for water wings. I have a full time job, and so I would like my business to replace my current 7-330

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
There was a specific project that I was working on was giving me serious trouble. I kept breaking stuff, having to re glue parts back. I also place the wrong dimensions so I had to recut the material several times, which delayed the project by a week. The customer was understanding but I am new at this for sure.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I have many promises fall through, and I have had a few personal setbacks. Future business partners were lost. My mentor and I had a falling out, sadly it made us both better. I had to sell something personal to myself, to have the capital for the start up efforts. I have had a few burn out sessions. Going back and forth in my mind if I should quit. Even so I am still here and taking this survey is bringing back the fire, I can feel it.
