Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Robert Washington II. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Robert , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
Absolutely, but I never let it bother me too much.
I’m a big believer in allowing people to feel how they choose to feel. We all have a right to feel, it’s only when people try to force a change or make others feel wrong because they dont agree that bothers me. Whether music, religious views, or a favorite color, I’ve learn to let people be people.Trying to convince people otherwise comes through action. Like I cant show you ‘what I mean’ unless I show you. My way of doing that is my art, my music. I start by asking “How do ‘I’ feel about this & usually the point I’m trying to make gets across lol

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For sure, I’m Robert Washington, Cynthia’s son, known to most as ‘Lil Sick’. I’m from the jungle of Fort Worth,Tx & my weapon of choice is music. Whether through piano, saxophone, guitar, or just through words my goal is to impress with the ability to empathize & relate. Like imagine turning on ‘that one song” & it speaks directly to how you feel. Since a kid I struggled with (sad to say) the normal struggles growing up in Fort Worth,Tx & my music is a direct reflection of not only how I feel , but apparently thousands of others. I feel obligated to ‘help heal’ through music, not only for listeners but myself included. As far as what I’m most proud of? I would have to say not giving up is my biggest accomplishment. When so many things come & go, confusion, doubt, financial troubles, addiction, eternal struggles, etc. I’m just proud to say I never quit. Never have, never will.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The end result. Watching something you thought about become tangible is a feeling like no other! Then for it to become something physical & people actually enjoy & appreciate it is just that much more satisfying. Cherry on top.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn the survival/victim mentality. Sometimes when you’re in the midst of your pain & problems , it’s hard to look outside of how you feel. I used to blame the world for my mistakes until I learned the concept of a ‘Silver Lining’ . Meaning just because it initially looks bad , doesn’t mean it’s not any good. Not only has that saved me a bunch of stress & energy, but it helped my career & craft. People began to see a better me & it showed through the music. I went from being a “Struggle/Life is Hard” artist into a “Hopeful/Inspirational ” type of guy. The pain turned into a fuel. But yeah…seeing a silver lining saved me
