We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Robert Walker a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Robert , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Truant So Fluent is my most important project. I’ve been a bassist for 22 years and a lyricist for over 15, it’s quite literally how I make sense of existence. In 2020 I was gifted a laptop, I acquired an interface, a good guitar, a midi controller, a decent microphone and I’ve been composing music ever since at a pretty crazy pace. To date I’ve released 9 albums but have over 34 albums (and counting) written and recorded for future release. Truant So Fluent will be my story once I’m gone.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
In 2003 I was introduced to playing music, particularly the bass, when my lifelong friend and song brother emerged from their first practice space and told me to “buy a bass, we’ll show you what to do” upon firing their original bassist. It’s been my whole life ever since. I started writing lyrics a few years into my musicianship and I still write every single day. I take equal pride in both aspects of my artistry because they serve me in very different ways, while writing sends me out into space, the bass brings me back to Earth yet they work together so harmoniously despite the dichotomy between the two.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My ultimate goal for Truant So Fluent is simple: become one of the most prolific songwriters to ever to ever grace the medium. Money and fame are inconsequential, I create regardless of reaction. If I die an unknown I’ll be fine as long as I get to keep composing.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to disassociate with the notion of gauging success by any other measure than my own. This mindset wasn’t easy to come by, early on I felt like I had to prove myself outward but over time I just set my own bar because my standard goes beyond fame or fortune.
