We were lucky to catch up with Robert Q. Jackson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Robert, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Learning the craft of acting has been a journey and it’s been amazing. It’s something I’ve been doing since I was a small kid. I guess it’s always been in my blood and something I wanted to do. Being a movie buff at a young age really inspired me to pursue an acting career. Watching all of my favorite actors do what they do best, made me want to do the same thing. So learning how to be better at something that I’ve watched my entire life has been fun and challenging.

Robert, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Robert Q Jackson is an actor, businessman and entrepreneur. A Detroit native, raised on the west side of his city and Mumford alumni. With a background of 12 years in the Air Force, he has undeniable integrity, grind and dependability. Acting since the young age of 6, his life long passion of being in front the camera has always been a dream. Doing some standup and improv sets over the years helped keep that fire burning. Gaining discipline and structure in the military prepared him for any challenges in life. Now older, he is finally able to pursue this dream. Currently finalizing several productions in 2023 alone, he will be at 28 projects in 22 months, From film to theater, he is motivated to make his presence known to all. In business, he is building his resume as well. With 3 business to date, he is able to also purse his love for food and cars. His luxury transportation business R.I.S.E. (Ride in style everyday) is steadily growing with clients. His soon to be restaurant is under development with his financial team and will be opening in early 2024. Also in the works, is his own production company. GYPR productions, Get Your Popcorn Ready, is a peer given identity he has embraced and coined into a official business brand. Robert is dedicated to the hustle and hard work of accomplishing his goals.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
The best thing I can suggest for people who are trying to get into the acting business, and or start a business is “Understanding your WHY”. This just means that you have a very identifiable reason why you’re doing what you’re doing. Having that specific purpose that only YOU know about keeps you focused and grounded. Dont ever forget it. Dont tell anyone, dont even hint at it. Keep it to yourself and stick to it. That has helped me so much in my journey.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson that I’ve had to learn over the years is that when you stop trying to do it for everyone else and just do it for you, it’s less stressful and more rewarding. When you have nothing to prove to anyone, but yourself, you tend to get a lot more things done. Also, I’ve had to not take things so personally. Everything isn’t always going to work the way that you want it to work. Sometimes it’s not you. You can be in the right place, at the right time and it’s just not “your turn”. It can also be any other combination of those three and one not actually be the one that’s needed. I’m very competitive, and I’m a little hard on myself at times. So it took me a long time to realize that I’m gonna lose a lot more than I’m gonna win, but it’s not about winning or losing. Its always about the journey, the process and the lessons
