We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Robert Pope a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Robert, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents taught me to always be grateful. Gratitude is a discipline best experienced in both good times and the bad. My parents both biological and adopted displayed it regardless of any external factors. Also, character is of far more value than anything you can sell it for. Don’t trade it for something crazy like money, fame, power, sex and or the entire world.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
My love for helping others started at a young age. Being a young child growing up in the Foster Care system and adopted by my foster parents. The Bakers loved me unconditional and not focusing on my past. I’ve adopted that attitude in life when meeting people. Everybody has a past, I try and look beyond their past and see the good in people and or try and bring out the best in people. I was reunited with my biological mother during my teen years and she also taught me a deeper meaning of loving one regardless of their position in life. This is what brought me to organize The Pope Center of Atlanta, helping Atlanta’s Homeless Citizens and just being there for them and showing them love regardless of race, creed, color, age or anything. I am thankful to God for His love and His love allows me to love others that same way. This has been a staple for me in ministry, loving God’s people. I love the congregation I currently pastor at Beulah Baptist Church Atlanta, Vine City.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Putting God first in everything, every decision, every thought and allowing God to order my steps in life, ministry and business. Meeting people where they are but NOT leaving them there.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
When it come to people, there is no such thing as managing people. You do not manage people, you inspire and encourage people, but you manage the process. I think once you learn that concept, it will help you in business, your personal life as well as a great leader.
