We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Robert Pomahac a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Robert, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
It was 2019 and I was on vacation with my family in Asia, working late at night and my wife and said “What are you doing, you work 70 hours a week, you barely see your kids and now you’re working on vacation?”
She was right. What was my purpose in life?
I thought it was running a successful physical medicine clinic, but I had no balance in my life. When we got back, I took the time to realize that what was missing in my profession was answering one simple question I heard from 100,000s of patients over 20 years.
“Why was I in pain and why hasn’t anyone shown me the causes before I came to see you?”
So in April 2019, I closed by 10,000 sq/ft clinic, began to consult two clinics that were going bankrupt and began working on a comprehensive objective diagnostic evaluation process. And that’s when Modern Health U was born and I re-discovered my soul purpose..
Over the next 4 years, I started to read white papers, attend webinars, have discussions with medical experts/researchers and contact diagnostics companies that were research based. I developed a comprehensive, objective data collection approach for acute/chronic spine pain, TBI/concussion and sports research/performance.
The learning process over the last 4+ years has been nothing short of a roller coaster. The ups and downs has opened my eyes about how poorly examined and ineffective the treatments were for neck and lower back pain, and TBI/concussion.
My goal was to re-image a research based, proof driven approach utilizing statistical biomarkers to validate the underlying pathologies and corrective treatments.
At MHU we’ve created a systematic approach that combines physical medicine, cellular medicine and biologic medicine. We provide proof to the why and make recommendations for effective treatments
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started lifting weights at 16, and then in my mid 20s progressed into bodybuilding and powerlifting. . I grew up in Canada and played elite hockey and soccer until I was 21. The stress and injuries that accumulated made me interested in how the body grows and how it heals. I attended the University of Waterloo, where my pre-med focus was on functional biomechanics/research. I received my doctorate at SCUHS in CA. That led me to studying applied spinal mechanics and structural correction.
I guess looking back at my athletic career, I suffered many injuries and never felt that the traditional medical model provided a whole body approach to health care. So at the end of the day it was faith that made me the curious doctor I am today. I needed to figure out why I was struggling with chronic health conditions even though I continued to be active. The search for “why” drove me to uncover my scientific, technology based evaluation system. And it was highly successful. It was the drive to figure out “me” that started it all.
In 20 years of clinical practice, I was able to establish myself as a top doctor in LA. I had a thriving business, multiple divisions, working with a variety of practitioners helping thousands of people every month with their health and wellness concerns. But it came with a price! I had no time with my family. I was missing out on everything…was it worth it?
I made one of the hardest decisions in my life. My family was more important, and with the support of my wife, I closed my clinic.
I think what I’m most proud of was that I started my first clinic in the basement of a gym where it was just me, and then my vision created the busiest medically integrated clinics in LA without any investment. I did it on my own.
If you work hard, stay on course and believe in your vision, your dreams will come true.
My journey has led to me to think out of the box, to be innovative, to not follow the status quo and to work with a number of very talented doctors and researchers to create a one of kind medical diagnostic center, Mondernhealthu.com
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
In order to be a successful entrepreneur you need to realize that your vision will occupy your existence. You will live, breathe and sleep it. The success of your business will be 10x harder than you could have imagined. You are the one who will be accountable for whether or not your business thrives or fails. You will second guess yourself, you will want to quit and you will struggle whether all of it was worth it. In the end, the answer is YES.
One of my mentors said, in order to be a great doctor you need to be curious. I took that to heart and I have tried to always approach the health and wellness of my patients with, “how do I prove it!” If I can measure it, I can manage it. People want answers and they want solutions, but most importantly they want the proof. So if you can use your years of professional experience with a way to objectively validate your approach, then you have a game changer.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
My first clinic was in the basement of a gym. I was the front desk, massage therapist, doctor and personal trainer, I had to succeed, I had no back up plan. I moved into a larger space, in a more prestigious area. I hired a front desk, two massage therapists and utilized the personal trainers of the gym to rehab my patients. Life was good.
That was short lived, as the gym owner realized the income my method was generating with functional training, broke the contract and kicked me out.
Now I had no place to practice, a patient list that needed care and because I grew up in Canada, I had no credit history which made it difficult to get a lease.
I almost moved back home, I didn’t know what to do and I was depressed.
I decided that I was better than what I saw in the mirror and finally was able to rent space in a high rise, I went for broke, opened a 10,000 sq/ft facility with a fully operational gym overlooking the Hollywood sign. It was me against the world, I was working paycheck to paycheck, but due to my trust in my vision and the ever convincing self-belief that I was really good at what I did, I made it.
