We were lucky to catch up with Robert McDavis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Robert, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
After the chaotic year that 2020 was I took a risk by investing in laser engraving as well as the time it’d take to learn a new craft. Now after two years of experimental projects I can see I had really invested in myself so with the skills learned I could take the biggest risk now by reopening the shop.
Robert, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those who don’t know: while I have always been naturally talented, and have strived to live a creative life I got my start from the attempt to help with my fathers medical bills.
After the tragic loss of my father I started my studio Somber Creations where I used my talent & skills for memorial photo editing. Sort of my attempt at helping people find a bit of peace that I myself lacked. Which is why even when 2020 lead to the closing of my studio & shop I still continued to offer my services free of charge every Christmas.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative?
While I always found the creation & process of bringing a dream to life to be the reward I now can see after having created & worked on so many memorials for others the reward has become seeing the bit of peace my talents have brought them.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
We all know the story of 2020: All it’s loss & destruction. So fast forward now to the present after the many set backs that followed 2020 much like a rebel I am still here living the creative life.
