We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Robert Lyons a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Robert , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Learning photography is just like baking and decorating a cake, understanding all the ingredients to create a firm base and then you provide attention to detail to make your creation pop blessing it with you own style. I have studied photography in college it allowed me to understand the basic fundamentals, then watching YouTube help me develop my style. I do not think speeding the process up is necessary but yet allowing time for your talent to develop but picking up a camera switching it to manual mode and start clicking and adjust as you go probably the brief way. I think understanding how to use natural light is essential, being able to adjust your camera to accommodate for lights is very important. Overthinking is the biggest obstacle just allowing yourself to absorb the moment and capture how you feel.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi! I’m Robert (Rob) a native of Durham (Durhamite), I started doing photography circa 2009 but made it a career in 2019, It was always kind of a dream of mine to work for a magazine company and take photos of amazing locations and the people that occupy these spaces. So, I decided to grab a camera and equipment to begin working within and on my passion. I provide sharp detailed prints for various occasions. I enjoy street photography but finding myself to enjoy capturing more personal moments like wedding engagements, birthdays, and graduations. I am most proud of being able to provide and create lasting memories for my clients helping to bring their vision into my craft. The best feeling is scrolling through social media and seeing photos you have created for clients. My brand goal is to provide quality experiences through photography, to provoke positive emotions by capturing remarkable moments and freezing them.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The ultimate mission is to be able to travel the world and take pictures of amazing places, also getting my photos published. I think that would complete my goal list! I just enjoy being creative and finding inspirations within different environments.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source for new clients is through your old clients, providing great experiences and backing it with the body of work and healthy interactions between your and the clients helps your business spread faster than any ad could do. People enjoy great experience and that drives customers to want to support.
