Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Robert King. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Robert, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I self-taught myself how to animated around early 2021. Animation is something I’ve always been interested in, however, at the same time I was pursuing a degree at a 4 year school for Mathematics. With that in mind, I went to look for the important resources to succeed in this field. Knowing what I know now, I believe planning would have helped sped up my learning curve. The skills I valued the most were multitasking and learning to not overwhelm the 3D program to where it crashed. If I were to organize practice times during the week, it would have helped me be more consistent. That is until you have to overcome obstacles. I was faced with many barriers like researching the correct topic, learning to save work, and finding the right online teacher.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am 25 years old and I have become a self made special effects artist. Since I created BOBLIFE, I’ve progressed from knowing camera and video to doing/creating things from scratch. I got into my field by taking a leap into the unknown; I knew something in my life needed purpose and I decided to poured it all into a talent which later turned into my craft. Something that sets me apart from the others is my imagination. I feel like some animators/editors use the same template where I strive to go outside the box for every new project. I am most proud about this new TV show I’ve been working on called ‘BOBBO’. I hope it to showcase my skills on a new level. Once it is released, people tune in and give flowers while they’re still fresh.
Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
For one of music videos ‘Vicious’, we climbed into an abandoned subway station underground. We had to make sure that everyone apart of the team got to the location safely without getting arrested or electrocuted.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Something to know as a creative: Never give up. I know this is something cliche to add but perseverance is something that will take you far as an artist. Many people will come and go as fans but it truly is important to stick to your bearings and create something that comes from within. In result, you’re bound to earn something out of whatever you’re doing. Many things take time and you cannot rush at any point. Through the ups and downs, only your true fans will stick around for your glow that comes later. Stay with it and never give up!
