We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Robert Hill a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Robert, appreciate you joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
When I started Stoned Panda Beatz I had very little money, I was trying to raise my profile across social media platforms by any means possible. One day I decided to risk it all and put all my time into my craft. I started making flyers on my own. I put them up in various towns and venues before moving onto making stickers. It made me nervous to put myself out there as a businessman but the risk of failure didn’t stop me. I started going to events, passing out flyers and stickers, and people really took notice. Now Stoned Panda is a a recognizable name, and more people want to hear my new music. If I had not taken these risks I would not be where I am today with Stoned Panda Beatz.
Robert, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Stoned Panda Beatz is a record label based on the premise of making music for stoners by stoners. I make all kinds of music that can give a vibe to the listener. My music is for both new and old generations that want a new feeling in music. Working with musicians around the world, I strive to put out the best quality music for all walks of life while still focusing on the 420 community. Stoned Panda Beatz is not just a brand but an idea of coming together based on the vibe of a common sound.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Finding clients can be hard but if you are persistent and caring about the work it helps make those strong connections. As much as possible I try to meet clients in person to establish a real and true connection. Reaching out through social media and phone calls are some of the other great ways that we connect with clients and artists alike. I am a real people person. I have never met a stranger. I tend to meet people wherever I go.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I used to wait for advertisement backing as well as waiting for the perfect time to put out new music. I found that by taking chances and risks, depending on myself, and not waiting for responses has changed my approach from when I began. This is my big take-away and lesson learned. Taking risks financially and artistically is how I have gotten a stable fan base and recognition in my craft. Risks are good to take because they allow you to take a chance on something nobody thought possible, not even me. If you feel a strong connection to any time of craft, go after it, take the risk, or you may never get the chance again.
