We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Robert Grant. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Robert below.
Robert, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
In my earlier years in the music industry a lot of my peers though I was just a rapper which was totally incorrect. Some of them may or may have not known that I am a true musician. I grew up playing the saxophone. I have played all types of genres including but not limited to rock, pop, alternative and R&B. I have a very diverse catalogue so I have been constantly miscatergorized by people. So I feel my abilities are infinite when it comes to music.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am the founder and CEO of WNY Merchant Consulting with over a decade of experience in the payment processing field. My customers are independent small business owners as well as some larger business’ who accept credit card processing for payments. I am also the CEO of Stay Grindin’ Inc. and Stay Grindin’ Music and go by artist name O’Mega Red. As an extension of Stay Grindin’ Inc I also have a clothing line which embodies the stay Grindin’ culture(Stay Grindin’ clothing). I specialize in artist development, music licensing and publishing. As a music artist, producer and arranger, I have refined my blend of reality music and have earned critical acclaim and widespread appeal across the globe.
I believe what sets me apart from others is my diversity, independence being a master communicator/business developer and consultant. I take time with each of my clients and offer a personal friendly touch to each one’s needs and help them increase their sales and their bottom line. What separates me from other artists/producers in the music business is my stage performance. I provide a dynamic experience whether i’m backed by a rock band or a DJ. I educate artists/producers to the licensing and publishing realm and not just making music by showing them how to get their music licensed and published to build generational wealth and protect their intellectual property.
What I’m most proud of is keeping my word to my clients whether it be in the music industry or corporate america. I always under promise and over deliver. I take pride in being consistent with my clients. My brand stay grinding inc is not just a label to me it truly is a way of life. It’s for those who strive to reach their goals no matter how big or how small they may be.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
There was a time that I had to pivot in business, career and my life. I was at a high point in my music career, but the business just wasn’t right. I had a partner/investor and the business portion was not being run correctly. At that time I had a young daughter and i realized money was not coming in which was really affecting my life. My partner who was supposed to be handling all the business like publishing/registering my songs so that I could be receiving my royalties was doing the complete opposite. My business wasn’t even registered. All the money we were investing was showing no return. I decided to pivot back to the workforce to sustain an income and my life/family. While I was working I took the initiative to educate myself about the business side of music. I began to understand that it was way bigger than just the music. That brought me to beginning to attend ASCAP conventions and I gained knowledge on music publishing and licensing for TV and film. This landed me my first co publishing deal and huge placement with WB for Black lightning’s theme song which is a DC comic book hero. The knowledge I gained from ASCAP and these experiences also made me understand that if I was going to survive I had to become a serial entrepreneur which led me to start my business’ to have passive income.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist for me is being able to create cinematic music that my fans can visualize through sound. Connecting with my fans and seeing them engaged and excited about what I am doing and my message and how it inspires them is truly the best part. On the creative side I would say this allows me to take my life experiences and convey it into my music making it relatable to my fans.
