We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Robert Dorfman . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Robert below.
Robert, appreciate you joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
Without question, my biggest inspiration is my mom. She is an absolute rockstar. Growing up, I remember she would work two jobs while taking PhD courses at night – all while raising me as a single mother. My grandparents wanted her to focus on her career, so they had me stay with them and helped her raise me. No matter how much she worked, my mom always made time for me and made me feel like I was the most important person in her life. She currently serves as the CEO of the world’s largest healthcare media agency, and I am so proud of all she has accomplished because I know there is no harder working person on this planet than my mom. Most importantly, I learned from her the concept of leading by empowering others. I think all too often we see leaders who rule by instilling fear, but my mom’s leadership style is one of uplifting those around her and making them feel like they can achieve anything. I think this is what makes her such a successful leader, and this is something I try to emulate in my own practice and life.

Robert, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Dr. Robert Dorfman, and I am a surgeon who specializes in hair restoration and advanced medical aesthetics in Beverly Hills. I am the Founder and Medical Director of the Done by Dorfman Clinic, which I am proud to say is rapidly growing to become one of the top clinics in Los Angeles. I am also the Founder and CEO of the Hair 1000 Corporation, which is a medical grade hair care company that is pioneering non-surgical solutions for hair health.
My journey into aesthetics began at Northwestern University’s Combined BS/MD Honors Program in Medical Education. With the goal of expanding my knowledge, I went to the University of Oxford and got a master’s degree in the History of Medicine. After internship and residency training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at UCLA, I worked at a prominent Hair Transplant center before launching my own clinic, where I have pioneered bespoke services in hair and anti-aging treatments.
Today, I see patients in Los Angeles, Miami, and New York, and I consider myself the luckiest doctor in the world because I have the absolute best patients in the world. They make my job so fun every day, and are one of the main reasons I love what I do.
I see beauty as an art in a world full of face and hair treatments. I use a special technique I invented called “filler microdosing,” using minute amounts of filler in strategic points, ensuring the results are natural appearing and timeless. My clients always leave looking like the best version of themselves.
At the core of my work is caring for my patients. Every appointment with me is customized and tailored to the patient’s exact needs and wants. I spend an hour with every patient, which is unheard of in modern medicine where patients usually only see their doctor for a few minutes. Before doing any procedures, I take meticulous measurements, and couple it with my artistic eye and gentle touch. The results are different when you take the time to really make things perfect.
And while aesthetics have always been at the forefront of my work, hair restoration is another passion of mine. As someone who personally experienced hair loss at 19, I am familiar with the emotional turmoil it can cause. My quest to find a solution to my own hair loss led me to create the Hair 1000 Corporation. I am hopeful this company will change the way people care for their hair, focusing on preventative treatments and early intervention.
Fashion and artistry intermingle in my philosophy. Just as a half-inch alteration can redefine a man’s look in a suit, a slight touch-up can revitalize a person’s appearance. Beauty is in the details. It’s about the minor adjustments, the subtle enhancements, and the preservation of one’s natural beauty.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been doing amazing work and providing incredible results for my patients. Believe it or not, I have built my entire clientele predominantly by word of mouth. I started small, just doing treatments for friends. But then those friends told their friends, and their friends told their friends, and so on! I am now so booked up with patients I’ve had to start expanding office hours and even see patients on weekends. But one thing stays consistent: I give each patient encounter 110%. I treat every patient as if they are a VIP. It is not uncommon for me to spend an hour or more with each patient, and I take the time to really get to know them and understand their aesthetic goals and dreams. My patients get unlimited free touch ups, and have access to me 24/7. Excellent customer service is at the core of what I do. I also pay attention to details. Our office is beautifully decorated, and patients are greeted with the finest refreshments. The entire experience is seamless. I built the clinic by imaging what I would want if I were the patient. I am the most meticulous patient myself, so I wanted to create an environment that I would love going to. That is how I’ve grown the Done by Dorfman clinic to what it is today.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Without question, my leadership style is based on the book Multipliers. One of the central tenants of the book is that there are two types of leaders. The first are called Diminishers, they are those that rule by fear and intimidation, they make you feel small and scare you into doing what they need. I find this to be a terrible leadership style. The second group of leaders are called Multipliers. They make you feel confident, like you can achieve anything, and empower you to do your best work. This is the kind of leadership style that I try to emulate in my business. I surround myself by people who are talented and who have positive energy, and encourage them to be creative and have fun. An important mantra: my employees do not work for me, they work WITH ME. We are building something amazing TOGETHER.
