We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Robert Dimon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Robert below.
Robert, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
After buying jewelry so many times from chain stores only to be bored of a piece after wearing it only a few times, I decided to try my hand at re purposing some of the necklaces I had and turning them into something new. A few friends liked, and even bought a piece or two. I decided to try consigning some pieces, only to be be discouraged a bit by the shop owners that I tried to sell with. I still would dabble a bit, but the excitement was temporarily lost. Fast forward a few years, and a friend of the family gave up a boat load of beads and jewelry making supplies and my vigor was re-instated. I took new pieces to consign at a couple of stores and thy were accepted and sold well in both. Then in 2022 I met my life (and soon to be business partner) Roger and things started to take off. He encouraged me to keep creating, and we even discussed the possibility of selling at least part time to start at pop up markets. Then in the early summer of 2023 with my job about to close its doors for good, Roger and I decided to make our move. Keeping the original concept of turning something old into something new in mind, Shadow Knight Curiosities was born. From summer into fall, we sold our handmade jewelry and Roger’s awesome dream catchers at local pop up vendor markets well into the winter. With a successful first year under our belts, we created the winter away and prepared for another successful season. Now in our third year, we’ve pushed our boundaries to become a little odd and eclectic, putting a gothic twist on some of our jewelry pieces to make them uniquely our own, and have found homes in both the local craft markets, and in the local music scene selling our products to concert attendees and musicians.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Our brand is uniquely our own. A majority of our products we try to use our own grown and locally sourced supplies before having to expand for other material. Both of our skillsets have been self taught from weaving, wrapping, spinning, painting and more. We strive to look at the beauty in the strange and weird and to bring that to others to be able to appreciate the odd.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
We stay true to ourselves with what we do. Being able to up-cycle and re-use as much as possible, it really helps us keep our costs low and pass savings on to our customers. Even the simple things, like displaying our earnings on used playing cards is not only more cost effective, it alsohelps draw the eye of customers.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
First starting out, I took some jewelry pieces to a local shop that took consignment shop to see about putting then in the store. As the owner looked over what I had brought, I could tell that it was not going to work out. It just wasn’t the right materials for her store. It was discouraging being told that your product wasn’t good enough, but I didn’t let that keep my spirit down. I took my jewelry pieces to work with me not long after and people loved and bought what I had created. Now, all of these years later, Shadow Knight Curiosities has been born, and we are now in our third successful year.
