We recently connected with Robert Del Quadro and have shared our conversation below.
Robert , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
My favorite part, and what keeps me growing, is the learning process. As with any craft there’s always multiple ways to achieve the final results you’re looking for, candle making is no different. I spent the past 10 years experimenting with different wax, working styles, coloring, molds, etc. And I’m still continuing to learn.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Where it all began. I started this wonderful journey in 2013 shortly after moving to DFW. It started as a quick and easy way to make extra money, so I thought. I was making your traditional container candles and didn’t sell many of them outside of friends and family. Wasn’t until 2015, when I decided try using this silicone skull mold I found online, that I started getting some online sells. I shortly gave up on the container candles and sought out the most unique and detailed pillar style candles molds and based my business off of those. Since then I now have over 40 different designs, multiple online selling platforms, in 2 local shops under consignment, multiple vendor events, and selling wholesale. What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
What I find most rewarding being an artist is that you, in a sense, are your own boss. I can be free to run my business how I want with the designs I want. There is no “cookie cutter” template to follow.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
One challenge as a creative is that some consumers don’t understand the time and cost that is put into making something that is not mass produced. As a society we have become accustomed to next day shipping and low manufacturing cost from foreign exports. However, when you’re buying from a small local business the time along could be a big factor in the price. Where a large factory could produce 1,000 items to my 1, there is usually a bigger cost for the pennies you would save. Purchasing from a local small business is typically better for the environment, locally sourced materials, and improves our local economy.
