Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Robert A. Lane. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Robert, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
One of the basic components to being successful is discipline. Discipline really means honoring the agreements you make with yourself and following through. For example, something as simple as setting your alarm is an agreement with yourself. If you set your alarm to wake up at 6am, get up! Don’t keep hitting the snooze button because each time you do, you are ingraining a bad habit which tells your subconscious that you can’t honor the agreement you made with yourself. When you don’t honor your agreements, your subconscious will not trust you with any future agreements you make. Change that habit!
Another quality successful people have is starting each day with eagerness and positivity to do the best they can. In addition, other qualities like time management, listening skills, holding yourself accountable, and believing in yourself are all key factors to success. Finally, you must be willing to do the work. Laziness equals failure. Self-entitlement equals failure.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Absolutely! I am an Audiobook Coach & Producer and my business is called Robert Lane Coaching. I specialize in helping published nonfiction authors turn their book into an audiobook and teach them how to do a compelling narration in their own voice. Not only do I work with nonfiction writers but also coaches, entrepreneurs, educators and poets who have published books. I created an audiobook coaching program called “Your Book Your Voice” which is a do-it-with-you program taking the author from setup and preparation of their own recording space to learning the fine art of voice-over narration and finally publishing their audiobook on Audible, Amazon and Apple by the end of the six-week course.
My coaching business started almost four years ago after spending thirty-plus years working in the entertainment industry. I worked in production and also spent many years on the corporate side. I’ve worked at small radio and television stations to post production facilities to major movie studios. During that time, I started my own audio post production company called RRP Studios where I did mixing, composing music, sound design and voice-over for film and television. After I left the entertainment industry, I started Robert Lane Coaching as a career coach helping people love their job again and attain real work-life balance. I also did speaking engagements for big and small corporations.
Last year I wrote and published a book called “Lights, Action, YOU!” where I shared my experiences working in the entertainment world and tied each story to one of the career coaching concepts I taught in my program. The book hit #1 best seller in several categories on Amazon when it was published.
I talked with many authors who wanted to turn their book into an audiobook but either didn’t know where to start or tried to do it on their own and gave up because it was too confusing or frustrating. Some thought they didn’t have the voice to narrate their own audiobook but that is a 100% false belief. I decided to create an audiobook coaching program to address this growing need and added that to Robert Lane Coaching.
There are a lot of moving parts in creating an awesome audiobook. The audiobook coaching program is designed to take all the confusion and hassle out of the process.
If you’re a nonfiction author, you need to narrate your own book. This is your story and ONLY YOU can tell your story the way it was intended to be heard. Your style is unique…that’s what makes you YOU! Helping authors narrate their own audiobook and getting them published in six weeks is what makes my coaching program stand out from the rest. Plus, I don’t take any commissions from the authors so they keep 100% of their rights and royalties.
I really enjoy doing what I do because it is a marriage of two things that I love: coaching and audio post production editing.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Grassroots marketing has always been a great strategy, especially when growing a business. Do the research to find your best clients and get out there and talk to people. Another method that works well for my business is setting up joint ventures and bonus referral programs with other professionals in the book writing & publishing space. This has been a very effective strategy and creates a win-win for all involved.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Providing a quality product is a given. Being responsive, timely and helpful gains trust. The most important factor is that you deliver what you promise. In Robert Lane Coaching my guarantee is to work with my clients until the results are achieved. Their success is top priority. All of my clients have been extremely happy with their results and that is a huge component to build a positive reputation.
With the audiobook coaching program, not only do my clients get their audiobook published, but by teaching them how to narrate their own audiobook they build up incredible confidence within themselves. That is something they can apply to every aspect of their lives.
