We recently connected with Robby Bristol and have shared our conversation below.
Robby, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I think success is birthed from a mindset. You have to first truly believe in your head that you will be successful, but you also need to define what success means to you. Is it money? Is it fame and notoriety? Or is it just finding contentment and happiness in life? Once you have a clear definition and a goal set, then it’s all about dedication and consistency. People tend to stress motivation a lot but motivation comes and goes. Still grinding when the motivation to do so isn’t there is the real moneymaker. That’s dedication and consistency.
I became the musician I am because for years I would literally practice every single day for HOURS. I became the photographer I am because I’ve taken tens of thousands of photos. Put in the work and you’ll get to where you want to be.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
From the age of 2 I’ve been a musician; starting with the drums, picking up piano by the age of 6, guitar and singing around the age of 14, dabbled with the violin at 15, and then started DJing and producing my own music around the same time as well.
Near the end of high school, I started feeling the urge to do photography. I would often look at random scenery or see someone walking down the street and think “This would make a really cool photo.” I wouldn’t actually pick up my first camera until years later but once I did, everything just clicked. That was about 8 years ago and I’ve now been operating my photography business under the name Wxlf Productions where I’ve provided photography services in just about every genre you can think of.
Photography is a lot like music to me in the sense that it allows you to create something that didn’t exist before and I think that’s such a beautiful concept.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Artists view the world differently than most people. Where most people might hear a random noise and not think twice about it, a musician might hear a potential sample for a new beat they’re making. Where most people might see a blank wall and keep moving, an artist has already mentally turned it into a beautiful canvas. Being able to experience life this way is (for me at least) the most rewarding thing about being a creative. What can seem bland and unimportant to some can turn into something breathtaking in the right hands and that’s a powerful gift.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Whether it’s through music or photography, I want to leave a piece of me behind that people can enjoy. Life is short so photograph it. There’s enough dissonance in the world so compose something beautiful.
