We were lucky to catch up with Robbie Wilde recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Robbie , thanks for joining us today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
Misconceptions of a DEAF DJ until they research and then find out my dedication and passion for my art.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I go by the name, Robbie Wilde, aka thatdeafdj. I began my journey in 2004 in the New York City tri-state area. My passion for music developed at an early age playing instruments from flute clarinet bass guitar and piano. I got introduced to turntables at the age of 17, and that passion grab me by the hand and took me on this incredible journey.
In the beginning, I learned how to mix and transition songs thru the genre of house music. It wasn’t until the age of 22 when I got introduced to scratching and turntableism. The craft and culture made me interested to learn more and to practice daily until I become one of the best. I contacted DJ Shiftee, 2x DMC world supremecy champion, to teach me. There we did class twice a week 2 hours a day for 5 years at dubspot in New York City, teaching me the ins and outs of the culture and the skills behind turntables. As time progressed and my skills grew, my craft grabbed the attention of many. Not only being a deaf dj, but one that can be up to par with some of the top in the industry.
In 2013, I received an email from Hewlett-Packard computers about joining them in a collab for a global commercial with their new product. There my story had spread globally. Many days and nights of hard work has gotten me to where I am now. However, I still fight barriers and misconceptions about being a deaf dj.
Now in 2023, I have been producing my own music. I also went to dubspot to learn and be certified on Ableton in 2014. The school taught me how to use the program to produce music and lay out my ideas that I envisioned in my head. Now I get to share with the world. I recently released one of my singles in September and getting traction around the world. 350,000 streams and it is constantly moving up. My next release is in 12.31.23 with another Single called “Your Love” on all platforms.
My journey has not been easy, but it is part of any industry and any craft that you take. Your success is only determined by your passion and dedication behind your craft. It is a little harder due to my hearing disability, but I don’t let it stop me. As my high school quotes stated “Impossible is a word found in dictionary of fools.”

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal in this career and my craft, is to simply show the world that impossible is just a perspective. Believe in yourself, put the time into it, and don’t give up, you will reach your goal in God’s time. It has been very difficult, broke nights on Saturdays, but the end goal was totally worth it. My mission is to leave a legacy and stamp in the music world.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the feedback of the audience and how they can relate to my music. Music is therapeutic, and if my songs can uplift other spirits, that is an inspiration of its own.
