We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Robbie Tripp a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Robbie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
My biggest advice for artists and creators is to JUST START!! So many people let years go by while they wait on the “right time”, years they could have spent learning their craft/business and moving closer toward their dreams. Time will pass anyways, you might as well spend it chasing your dream! When I first started releasing music professionally, I had no idea about anything: how to get my song on Spotify, how to sign up for royalties, how to promote my music, etc. Five years later, I’m so glad I committed to starting and figuring it out along the way. In fact, I wished I had started even sooner! Trust in your ability to figure it out as you go and stay consistent. Once you realize that it’s less of a risk to pursue your passion than it is to live with regret, it makes it an easier decision to just go for it!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I released my debut single “Chubby Sexy” in 2019, a body positive anthem that was featured in GQ Magazine’s “Men of the Year” issue. My TikTok viral single “Big Girl Banger” started a trend of curvy and plus-size women celebrating their body confidence. I love making high energy music that inspires listeners to chase their dreams and be themselves!

How did you build your audience on social media?
In 2017, I posted a photo of me and my wife Sarah on the beach in Miami and captioned “I love my curvy wife…” and the rest is history! The body positive tribute to my beautiful wife went viral and within a week our Instagram following tripled and we were flying all around the world for events and brand partnerships. The key to building a social media presence is having creative content and staying consistent. Make the content that you love and you’d want to see and then keep making it! Eventually your people will find you and you’ll be able to build a community that comes to you for advice and inspiration.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I’ve noticed that few people understand the sacrifice required to pursue a career in the arts and/or in entrepreneurship. The journey down the unknown path can be dark and uncertain, and that is why many people opt for more security through traditional occupations. For those who feel they have a creative calling and a destiny to fulfill through self-expression, I send all my love and best energy, and try my best to remind them to keep applying pressure on your dreams! Keep at it, keep chipping away, and something will give way before you do. The only real difference between those who “make it” and those who do not is that they never gave up!
