We recently connected with Robbie Santolucito and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Robbie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
How The Glass Orchid Began
It all started when I enrolled in an adult education class to learn how to make a Tiffany-style Dragonfly Stained Glass Lamp. That class introduced me to the art of glasswork, and I was instantly hooked. But before I could even finish the lamp I originally set out to make, people began asking me to create custom stained glass pieces for them. What was meant to be a personal project turned into something much bigger—and it actually took me two years to finally return to that Dragonfly Lamp! My love for floral design came a little later, inspired by a floral designer friend. His creativity and passion sparked another creative direction in my own work. And that’s how The Glass Orchid was born—a name and a business that reflects both my love of flowers and glass, and the artistic journey that began with a single lamp.

Robbie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Over the years, I’ve found that the best way to build my clientele and reputation is by participating in glass and related shows and conventions. At these events, I perform on-site demonstrations, showcasing products and creating unique pieces to engage with attendees. Additionally, submitting my artwork to glass show competitions has been an excellent way to gain visibility. At my shop, I pride myself on offering efficient, personalized customer service and sourcing special products and equipment to meet my customers’ unique needs.

Do you have multiple revenue streams – if so, can you talk to us about those streams and how your developed them?
In addition to running my retail shop and custom design studio, I’ve also been a dedicated teacher. For many years, I taught stained glass and glass fusing through the adult education program at a local community college. My teaching had two main goals: first, to spark creativity and introduce more people to the world of glass art by giving them the skills and confidence to create their own pieces; and second, to support my shop by offering students access to the materials they needed. Since not all supplies were provided through the classes, many students would visit my store to purchase glass, tools, and other essentials for their weekly projects.
