We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Robbie Reid a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Robbie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
My parents worked so hard to ensure I didn’t get involved with “wrong crowds” and encouraged my nerdy passions – comic books (both DC and Marvel) anime, Star Wars, and others like it became part of my normal routine. I also got into “doing voices” because of all the nerdy media I consumed. It inspired me to want to share my passions with others as I got older. Other people need to know that it’s completely okay to nerd out on things – and to find your tribe that shares your similar passions.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Robbie Reid. I absolutely love encouraging people, making them happy, making them laugh/smile, and sharing things with them that interest THEM (not just what I like). I decided to become an “internet personality” because frankly – life can be so brutal and debilitating sometimes. I’ve connected with so many people over the internet, and to this day – those very same people and new people contact me and tell me what an inspiration I am to them. I thought I was just sharing silly statements/memes/videos on my Facebook, and on my YouTube just some geeky stuff or story time videos that made others laugh – but some people really enjoy what I do, and that’s what inspires me to continue doing it. I want people to have a safe space to “escape” for a while when life gets too unbearable. THAT is why I do what I do – because I love sharing nerdy/funny videos and content, but also – to make others laugh and feel a little better about life.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
It has not turned into my main/full time business or career, but I cannot and WILL NOT stop working so that it is my full time career. My parents, sisters, niece, and new phew are my main driving forces – I want to retire my parents and my eldest sister, help take care of my other disabled sister, and set up my niece and nephew for college.
The only way you truly fail is if you stop moving. I refuse to stop hustling so this can be my focal financial income. It’s not just about the finances, it’s about creating great experiences for other people, and helping others achieve greatness while building up my brand.
The more I connect with people and show them the real me, the more followers/supporters I’ve seemed to gain. I’m very real with my clientele – and people need to see that a person means what they say, and say what they mean. I will never give up on helping people, and if me posting nerdy movie/series reviews, encouragement, positive affirmations, real life issues related to my situations so others can feel validated helps people get further, not feel lonely, or inspires them – then I will not stop until I help as many people as possible!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think the fact that I’m so down to earth, willing to listen to others, and am pretty selfless has helped build up my clientele. I will never outright just disrespect anyone (unless you disrespect me or the people who support me or my family/friends).
Also, me actively engaging with people, responding to them and their “needs” (which is just to listen to them vent/offer advice), and constantly working on figuring out what people are more invested in nowadays. You have to be original – but you also need to be smart/strategic and figure out what works/what people gravitate towards, use some of that to aid in your business, and make it your own.
