We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Robbie Miller. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Robbie below.
Robbie, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I grew up in a small rural town in the Appalachain Mountains of West Virginia. I always had dreams of working in Hollywood. It wasn’t until my early 30’s that I went to beauty school on the East Coast and soon after moved to Los Angeles with 3 suitcases and a mountain of dreams. I had never been to LA before and didn’t know anyone.
To me what it takes to be successful is to live with your heads in the clouds and feet on the ground. I’m a firm believer that if you are passionate, do good unto others and fully believe in yourself and you abilities that the right people, places and opportunities will be given to you.
Sometimes we have to takes risks, we have to just JUMP. Life is short. Make it an adventure. I promise you if you give it your all, stay positive, work hard and surround yourself with good people your goals will soon follow suit.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
During my time on the East coast while in beauty school I took an airbrush workshop from a lady based in LA. She always told me that I needed to be in LA….the city of Angels and opportunity.
After beauty school I started working in a salon in Virginia beach. We hosted a hair class taught by Wella top educator Aubrey Loots. I researched him and found out that he owned many salons in LA. After that class with him on the East coast I told him about my dreams of moving to LA and asked for an interview. He inivited me to dinner and offered me a position at his salon in West Hollywood. 3 months later I was landing at LAX. I worked for him for a few months and then I met Dina Ousley (owner and founder of Dinair Airbrush makeup based in LA). After building a friendly relationship with her she offered me a position at her corporate offices in North Hollywood as head of global education. I worked at Dinair for about 3 years in education and product development. During my time there I always got messaged from beauty industry professionals from all over the world wanting to take an airbrush workshop with me. This is when I had a lightbulb go off and I thought to myself I should start teaching airbrush makeup workshops online. At that time there were a couple others online makeup educational companies offerering this but none of them offered it “live streaming”. I was the first to offer LIVE STREAMING beauty airbrush education to beauty professionals globally. I have been doing this for 5 years now and year after year it grows. The majority of my students are from small towns all over the world who are looking for higher education in airbrush techniques to bring to their clients.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Due to the fact that my business is based solely online I had to focus a lot of attention on social media (and to this day about 80% of my leads and students come from a solid social media presence).
With social media you have to be consistent. You must work at it everyday and create new content.
This includes posting everyday, following up with comments, questions and DM’s ASAP. Get creative with your content and make it interactive (giveaways etc.).
Also people these days like to see the human element of a brand so I feel it’s ok to sprinkle on top of your business social media an occasiaonal post about the person behind the brand, bring your followers into your life, share yourself with them.
This is wonderful at creating rapport with potential leads and letting them see the human side of your brand.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Staying organized with your business is a must. Also you need to be able to quickly and effiecintly followup with leads etc. A CRM is very important in keeping you organized and so that you may follow up with leads and current students/clients in a timely manner.
CRM=Customer relationship management. The one that I use is Insightly. You are about to create profiles for your clients, notes, and followup tasks.
