We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Robbie Mauch a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Robbie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
I moved to Erie 7 years ago. My husband and I were regular gym goers and the only place in town was the Rec center. While the Rec center had everything we needed, it was small and had limited equipment. We decided to open our own gym based on the need and the potential growth of the town. We started the process of getting a small business loan and looking for a space. This took some time and once we started building it took even longer to get permits and for the building to be built. We opened 6 months before covid. Unfortunately covid set us back leaps and bounds and we are still working to recover.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I have always worked out and for the last 5 years I have competed in bodybuilding competitions. I wanted to bring my passion for fitness to the town. I wanted to bring a space for the people of Erie and surrounding towns a place to train 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! We provide excellent trainers, awesome classes and a large clean strength training area with all the equipment you could need! The most rewarding part of owning the gym, is seeing the changes in our members health and life styles.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Opening the gym 6 months before covid, we were doing great and had a wonderful member base. Once covid hit we had to adjust to closers and the fear some members had. We adjusted some of our practices and procedures but we were able to stay open and offer services online as well as in person.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Being in tune with my members and what they want out of my business is key to keeping people coming to the gym. People need to feel welcomed and like they are part of our family. We make sure to do that every time a member walks through the doors. We welcome every member by name and do everything we can to keep them consistently coming back.
