Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to ROBBIE CONAWAY. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
ROBBIE, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s talk about social media – do you manage your own or do you have someone or a company that handles it for you? Why did you make the choice you did?
I do our own social media as I feel authenticity in your branding is extremely important. I want my current clients and potential customers to feel like they know me as a friend even before we start working on a new project. I think your personal values and your companies values should be exactly the same and I don’t believe in putting on a fake front for yourself or your business helps you in the long run. The world is filled with people and businesses pretending they are something they are not and these days everyone has become extremely distrustful and jaded about it.
Making real connections with real people you do business on a personal as well as professional level is a winning strategy, in my opinion.
ROBBIE, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Years ago I was in a touring rock band and we needed marketing material. Having a zero dollar budget, we had to do it ourselves and I took it over. This lead to photography, posters, artwork and video. I have always painted and drawn since before I could write my name and so that went into the mix as well. After the band, I ended up going freelance for these skills and after 8 years was hired as a Creative Director in Chicago which I did for 6 more years.
Recently, I’ve struck out on my own here in Denver and started my own video production business called “Popart Films LLC”. With the help of freelancers, I help businesses figure out a marketing strategy and then execution of materials ranging from social media to commercials to short films and music videos.
I specialize in the humorous and media that may require some form of visual effects to tell the story.
Recently my team and I filmed and edited a red carpet event in L.A. for Amazon Prime Video that I’m very proud of!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I feel like the world of advertising is so filled with the mundane and uninspiring that it’s nauseating. We have the tools to tell incredible stories and make media that people actually WANT to watch to help sell our products and services, but most businesses are too afraid of offending or just think about advertising in a very old school, boring, lazy way.
I want to make media that connects, that feels genuine and if I can make people laugh or at the very least “lean in” on the marketing material, then I’ve done my job.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Hands down almost ALL of my work comes from referrals. I pride myself on being very easy to work with and connecting with my clients on a very personal level. We work TOGETHER to get them the results they are hoping for. I try to position myself as a problem solver for my clients. Whether I do the work for them, or I know someone better qualified for the specific job, I’m always honest with them about what I think is their best move forward, whether or not it involves me.
This builds trust and there isn’t anything more important than that when doing business with people. They know that I will deliver what I say I will deliver in the time I tell them and that I won’t stop until they are completely satisfied.
Having return customers year after year is my number one priority.
