We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Robbi Gallagher a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Robbi, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us the backstory behind how you came up with the idea?
In 2015, I began my journey as a makeup artist, initially focusing on events like weddings and proms while balancing college and a job at Topgolf. The turning point came in 2020 when frequent trips to Los Angeles for various events and on-set work led me to discover a passion for photography, inspired by the newfound family I had in LA. Maddie McNeil, a dancer, choreographer, producer, and photographer, played a pivotal role in introducing me to this craft and connecting me with influential figures who shaped my creative path.
Upon returning to San Antonio in 2022, I established Gallagher Productions. My inaugural solo project was directing a music video, “Animated,” for rapper Guy Flores. Despite the daunting task of managing every aspect independently, I was confident in my ability to produce the best possible outcome. This venture paved the way for my entry into concert photography, starting with Retro Cowgirl, a band that significantly influenced my career trajectory. Through Retro Cowgirl, I gained exposure to diverse artists across Texas, catalyzing the growth of my business.
From my first music video with Guy Flores, I swiftly progressed, releasing four more videos, expanding my network throughout Texas, and venturing into the fashion and runway scene. The pivotal moment occurred during my collaboration with Retro Cowgirl when I was invited to shoot for various artists at SXSW, introducing me to the dynamic Ballroom scene.
Reflecting on my journey within the short span from the Animated music video to the present, I’ve built a solid foundation in Texas, worked with influential artists, and am now venturing into the fashion industry. The realization that I was on the right path dawned on me within the first month of collaborating with Guy and Retro Cowgirl. As I celebrated my one-year anniversary with my first significant client, I find myself traveling once again, this time for photography assignments in Los Angeles, Dallas, New York, and Seattle.
In this industry, success demands self-dedication, relentless promotion, and genuine love for the craft. Initially viewing this as a side gig, I am now immensely grateful for the transformation into a successful business that aligns with my degree in Public Relations. Living off my passion has become a reality, and as I embark on new adventures in photography, the journey has only just begun.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
In 2022, my journey into photography was sparked by my friend and fellow creative Maddie McNeil, a dancer and choreographer in Los Angeles. Initially, my experience in LA involved working as a makeup artist and production assistant for music videos and artistic visuals. Upon returning in the summer of 2022, I delved into photography, leveraging my background in set work and collaboration with various artists.
By January 2023, I directed my inaugural music video, marking the beginning of my immersion into San Antonio’s live music scene through collaborations with Retro Cowgirl. This launchpad allowed me to establish a consistent presence in concerts, events, and fashion shows, collaborating with a diverse array of creatives. My versatility spans both studio and on-location work, mastering set design, lighting, and low-light photography, particularly within the concert space.
A source of pride for me is the opportunity to document moments within LGBTQ+ spaces, contributing to our community’s vibrant narrative. The Ballroom scene, in particular, has not only opened doors for my career but introduced me to a network of friends who have become family.
For potential clients and followers, it’s essential to know that my work extends beyond photography; it’s a narrative crafted through collaboration, dedication to diverse spaces, and a commitment to capturing the essence of meaningful moments. I take pride in my ability to navigate different creative realms, solving visual challenges for clients, and fostering connections within the LGBTQ+ community. My brand is more than a visual journey—it’s a celebration of diversity, creativity, and the stories we tell through the lens.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
With working in the entertainment and fashion industry, it is all about not only who you know, but who knows you. When I was first starting I was consistently working with Retro Cowgirl enough that many people I was there sole photographer, which was not the case, however, this is just an example of who knows you in this scene. From working with them so much to having a network of clients who keep me running, I have met all of my clients either at shows, events, or even parties. I am always talking about what I do, not to brag, but to help promote myself as a photographer. Word of mouth marketing and referrals has absolutely been my number one source of stepping into the business owner that I am today.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Getting able to capture these special moments for so many other artists and creatives is the most gratifying part of my job. No one appreciates art like other artists do. Having the opportunity to work for so many bands to help them promote their art is my favorite part of the job.
