We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rob Turner. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rob below.
Rob, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
My album “The Great Big Yes” has been the most meaningful project over the past few years. It’s crazy to be releasing these songs at the end of 2023 when some of these songs were written in the gloomy days of 2020. I have enjoyed writing and recording these songs since then and am very proud of the result.
Rob, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Rob and my project is called Five Star Friend. I’m releasing an album called “The Great Big Yes” and it’s the culmination of 2 years of writing, playing and recording in my home studio.
Five Star Friend combines a mix of rock, pop, indie, and country to form a sonic amalgamation sweet on the ears.
Born on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, Rob began playing piano at a young age. After moving to Connecticut, then heading out to California, he started playing guitar and a few other instruments and never looked back.
From clangy, jangly Fender Jag-Stangs to crisp, layered harmonies to thumping, melodic basslines to soft, mellow 12-strings to…yes, even a bit of cowbell, you’re gonna find it all in Five Star Friend’s music. From the first album recorded in a garage, to the subsequent two demo EPs and later singles, it’s got that no-nonsense, keep-it-simple approach that’s come to accompany Five Star Friend and its sound.
Very excited to share with you my new music!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
This is a tough one – but a good one. For me, the feeling of completing a song and performing live on stage is equally as rewarding for different reasons. It shows the introverted and extroverted side of me. The introverted side says that writing and recording in my home studio is the most rewarding, where as the extroverted side says playing in front of people is the best. So it’s a balancing act – I think you can’t have one without the other. I certainly believe that if I did one of them 100% of the time it would get stale and I would need another outlet for my music.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
…to get as many people as possible to listen to my music!
