We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rob Nelson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rob, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I wish my creative career had started sooner. Like most people, everyday life and its challenges came first. Having a regular job, a family, financial responsibility, and the need to make a living, pushed my creative aspirations and goals aside. I finally decided to take the plunge and pursue a career in scriptwriting, with the mindset that whether I succeeded or failed, it was better to try than not try at all. I started writing scripts in my teenage years, and what began as a hobby, quickly grew into a passion for writing that has stuck with me for over 30 years and counting. I continually work to hone the craft of screenwriting, and currently have a slate of over fifteen scripts in my library.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an Author, Artist and Screenwriter based on the East Coast. I have been interested in the film entertainment industry since a very early age, and began writing scripts as a teenager. What started out originally as a hobby grew over the years until I decided to start writing professionally. I have a knack for creating memorable characters and intriguing stories within the scripts I write. I have continually worked to hone the craft of scriptwriting, and currently have a slate of over fifteen scripts. Although based in and a native of North Carolina, I have taken strides over the last few years in developing meaningful connections with other creatives, and have collaborated with other writers from different parts of the country. In March 2023, I began partnering with Dizzy Emu Publishing to internationally publish my scripts in both Paperback and Kindle edition books which are currently listed on Amazon.com. Between July and December 2023, I partnered with a friend and fellow writer from New Jersey to collaborate on a horror script that takes a fresh approach to the Zombie genre. I am always open to collaborating with like-minded individuals in order to craft and produce engaging and entertaining stories, and to support other creatives in their endeavors. I have the mindset that I’m not great at any one particular thing, but try to be better at what I am good at every single day. I am currently partnering with James Young of Dark Horse Productions and Entertainment in Utah as a working partner, specifically as a Scriptwriter and Editor.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
“I don’t go into writing a script thinking that I want to win an Academy award, or any type of an award for that matter. I just write what I know and love, to craft stories that I would personally want to see, whether in a theater, or in the comfort of my own home, and to hopefully be able to entertain audiences with the stories that stem from my imagination.”
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a writer for me is the fact that I can share my passion for writing to everyone. The characters and stories I create are meant to be shared with the entire world, and at the same time, help guide, nurture and support other creatives in their endeavors.
