We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rob LaColla a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rob, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
There’s some projects out there that take you to a place you wouldn’t normally go. Like playing a father who’s lost his son, to a sociopathic murderer. Fortunately, I’m neither one of these people. But understanding each character has made me a more sympathetic, emotional, and understanding person. I’m grateful for so many of the projects I had the opportunity to work on because many of them helped me see what others may be going through that we may not understand.
Rob, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m an actor originally from New York and relocated to Orange County, California in 2020. I grew up dabbling in everything that interested me from sports to theatre to music. My parents were very selfless in allowing me to pursue all my interests which I believe made me very well rounded which is something I’m proud of and thankful for. I currently act in film and television while also utilizing my love for videography and personal training in between acting gigs.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
There are so many supportive people and groups out there within the entertainment industry. When I first started, I thought this was a path I needed to take and figure out alone. From the Facebook groups I joined, to podcasts, to my acting classes I’ve taken, there are so many people out there willing to share insight and help in each others journey.
Have you ever had to pivot?
There’s so many peaks and valleys in entertainment. It’s easy to become discouraged and question your career choice within those valleys. Maintaining focus and confidence during those times isn’t easy but I know I need to always remind myself to push forward or else I’ll let the negativity and self-doubt control me. At a point where I thought acting needed to take a back seat, I landed a lead in a network film that gave me so much reassurance that it’s not my time to slow down or pivot just yet.
