Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rob Jua. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Rob, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Our mission at Disruptive Label is to become the leading music company that discovers and partners with talent from the African diaspora, developing them sonically, mentally, and business-wise, and bringing their talent to the global stage.
This mission is meaningful to me because, as an African American, Afro music brings joy to my spirit. I’ve been on a journey of self-discovery, seeking to understand who I am beyond what I’ve always known. My family’s roots trace back to Brooklyn, New York, and Jamaica, but that’s where the story stopped—until recently. In the past few years, I’ve embarked on a quest to rediscover where my ancestors are from, particularly in Africa.
This search has deeply influenced my musical tastes, taking me from being solely a hip-hop lover to embracing music from all walks of life. Reconnecting with Africa has become a central objective of my life’s purpose, and music is an essential part of that connection. This mission isn’t just a business goal for me; it’s personal. It’s about honoring my heritage and helping others do the same through the universal language of music.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My journey in music started around 2002 when I landed an internship at Quad Studios, which eventually led me to Roc-A-Fella Records. After Roc-A-Fella broke up, I pivoted into DJing and then transitioned into becoming a real estate broker. From there, I made the move to Atlanta and had to figure things out. I was still in real estate until I crossed paths with Kedar Massenburg. He found out about my music background and hired me to work A&R at his and Akon’s label. While I was there, I got the chance to work on Akon’s afrobeat album, and that’s when I fell in love with the genre.
Since then, I’ve worked with BuVision/Columbia, and eventually started my own company, Disruptive Label, which is both a record label and publishing company. One of my proudest moments has been signing one of Nigeria’s top songwriters/artist, Jaya. Now, I’m continuing to build Disruptive Label as the ultimate hub for African diasporic voices.
My story has been a true journey of faith and resilience, and I felt called to share it with the world. That’s why I released my first book, *Rich Again*. It’s been an incredible ride so far, and the book is already helping people transform, one page at a time.
Any advice for managing a team?
You have to know how to delegate and choose people who are better than you in areas where you’re not as strong. Learn to trust them, empower them, and step back. Trust that they’ll deliver the best results and that you made the right decisions. During tough times, never let anyone see you fall, even when the pressure is at its peak. Keep your head up, foot on the gas, and show them why you’re a bold leader. If they see you stumble, they’ll have doubts and lose confidence, too. So move with confidence!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
There was a time I had to pivot from music to real estate. Music wasn’t making me any money—it was mostly just expenses. As much as I loved it, I couldn’t keep going without consistent income. A friend of mine, who had also been in music, suggested I try real estate. I was hesitant at first, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It gave me the financial stability I needed to keep my music passion alive without the pressure. Real estate also allowed me to reinvest in my music career.
The point is, you should always have more than one thing going on. Everything in life has its ups and downs, but if you’ve got multiple streams moving in different directions, you’ll be OK in the long run.
