We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rob Hill . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rob below.
Rob , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
Growing up I didn’t have anyone I could turn to for guidance in the art world. I was very creative at a young age and I started expressing myself through fashion. I was designing and painting tee’s, pants, shoes, hoodies, you name it. I didn’t know it then, but that was when I first started my art journey. I made so many mistakes because I had a lack of guidance on how to approach things. In a way, yes I wish I had more knowledge at a younger age about what it meant to be an artist. However, I am grateful for my journey as it made me develop more character, grit, commitment, and perseverance. I look at things differently and I am beyond grateful for all the support and love I get from others. It pushes me and makes me feel like I am in my true destiny. Everyone has unique upbringings, if something is meant for you, you will be guided towards that goal no matter what.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Rob Hill is a geometric abstract painter born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts Painting from California College of the Arts.
He is currently pursuing his Masters Degree in Fine Arts from Pratt Institute.
Precise line work is present throughout many of his creative works and the color inspiration is drawn from sports teams, 90’s television programs such as Martin, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and In Living Color.
Hill’s inspiration is reminiscent of pioneers like Frank Stella, Jackson Pollock, Mark Bradford, and Carmen Herrera.
Hill’s methodical approach to art is heavily influenced by the 8 years of military service with the U.S. Coast Guard.
The patterns and color usage are inspired by global travel and life experiences.
While in the Coast Guard, Hill learned valuable skills such as responsibility, consistency, and resilience.
Hill’s admiration for geometric shapes can be linked to historic Egyptian architecture, painting, and visual culture.
Over time, Hill has applied his abstract, hard edge aesthetic off the canvas and onto fashion such as denim, and leather, but also glass, wood, marble, and metal.
Hill has been creating public art projects for the past 9 years and they have been painted on basketball courts, non-profits, businesses, youth centers, and large scale canvases.
Hill considers himself as an artist with deep roots in his community and one who aims to unify people from diverse backgrounds through the power of art.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being an artist is being able to provide people with a unique one of one experience. When people come across my art pieces, the color usage and hard edge abstraction, allows them to conduct their own experience and message. I am also given the opportunity to constantly challenge my creative mind. To push the envelope and create breath taking pieces. I feel like I have an open field to run in with no gates, and this freedom allows me to create pieces that come from within. This is liberating. As artists we have a responsibility to evoke emotion and connection with others, it’s an honor to put art pieces into the world and receive that authentic love and connection back.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The goal behind my artwork is to unite people from diverse backgrounds through the power of art. I want people to come together and consciously connect with others. I also want to spread my art as far as it can go! I would love to see my artwork in different countries, galleries, museums, etc. I want to be able to provide people with a different way of looking at art. To not be told how to take in the art but to create their own distinctive outlook. I want people to have their own autonomy and be free to let their mind run loose. I too want to continue to be a positive role model in my community and showcase to others that no dream is too big to achieve. If one sets their mind to it, they can reach their goals regardless of when you started or how old you are.
