We recently connected with Rob Gray and have shared our conversation below.
Rob, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
In the music industry, it takes dedication, talent, and perseverance. I’ve developed a never take no for an answer outlook.
Rob, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My musical journey started at an early age listening to my dad play trumpet and guitar. By the age of 6, I had learned a few chords on guitar and was learning scales on the trumpet. Fast forward to 7th grade I was in the middle school band as a trumpet player. By the time I reached high school, I had moved from trumpet to the dark side and joined the low brass world finishing high school playing trombone, baritone and tuba. Even though I was a horn player I still snuck my dads guitar out of its case and played. I got my first real electric guitar during my sophomore year of high school and I was off and running. Somewhere along the line I learned to play drums, and bass guitar. My musical influences range from MoTown, Funk, Blues, Country, and Classic Rock. I have been fortunate in being able to play with some amazing musicians. From Afterschock, Southbound, The Highway, founding Shades of Grey(in 2007) it’s has been quite the ride that I’m excited to continue as long as I’m able too…
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I have always taken the approach to underpromise, and over deliver. Being flexible and willing to work with venue owners has also played a big part in why we’ve been playing steadily since 2007.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I’m pretty old school. I believe that a phone call has a more personal touch than a text or email. I do utilize social media to communicate as well. The music industry has mostly gone the way of electronic communication with promoters and venues, but there are still some small family owned places that appreciate a phone call or stopping by to check in with them. I’ve been fortunate enough to become friends with several business owners over the years, and those relationships are what has help make this band successful.
