Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rob Gomes. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Rob, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
When I first got into non-scripted, there weren’t many producers of color….my mission has always been to help give people of color a hand to hold on to, someone they could relate to and trust, a producer/friend to help them tell their story (I mainly produce dating shows & docu-series)….
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started at the very bottom, I was a Page at Paramount Studios, giving studio tours….I always had my eye on producing/writing… I did tons of years as an on-set Production Assistant in feature films, where I learned everything, it was my film school….I was a set p.a. for more than 9 years, it was a grind, I cried a lot, but it paid off in my career. Over time, I worked my way up the producing ladder, eventually to Supervising Producer. I’ve been Field Producing/Field Directing for over 10+ years, and I credit my time as a set p.a. with giving me the tools to make what I do, look easy….I mainly produce dating series, where I work with green talent, (regular people), I think one of the reasons I’m in demand, is the way I work; I deliberately keep an easy, fun vibe on-set….this helps create a space for the crew to enjoy bringing their creative best, then when the cast walks on to set, they see us at ease, having fun, being passionate about what we do….it instantly aids in them putting their trust in me to tell their stories..
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My biggest determination/goal is to tell wickedly original, new, and exciting stories centered around people of color….My primary area of work is in the non-scripted/docu space. When I pitch my projects, I tend to develop projects about those who don’t usually have the spotlight on them but are nonetheless inspiring for all of us. I love stories about immigrants, outsiders, minorities, and those who have to fight for their version of the American Dream.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
True, Hollywood is about connections and who you know, and friends of friends, etc….however, I’ve learned most of those people tend to look after people who look like them…I had to unlearn, trying to get powerful people to like me, in hopes of them helping me – they haven’t……However, my new pivot has been, to be amazing at my job, to show passion, to be super creative, to deliver amazing stories, to show I love what I do and that I’m dope at it…In return, I continue to work on A-list projects, I deliver hit shows, I work a lot, and doors have begun to open (May God Bless George Floyd, sadly, his death and BLM have caused people in power positions to begin to give people of other colors/races/religions a long overdo shot).
