Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rob Floyd. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Rob , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Such a great question here – how to earn a living from your creative work? So I’d like to start at the point where you have to know “why” you are doing your creative expressions. Once you understand the “Why” the rest of your work can really take shape. For me, I became a bartender and loved making people feel good about themselves. I was able to work with some of the best chefs and mixologists in the world, always remembering my “Why.” It may seem like a trivial job, but today I oversee over 300 million in beverage around the world as well as producing live and television content. My why never changes. I really want to put a smile on your face and make people happy.

Rob , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I call bartending my accidental profession. Let’s face it, no one grows up and dreams of long hours making drinks. I started like most people do in my craft. Someone didn’t show up for work and I told the manager that I knew how to bartend. This was a complete lie! I had no idea at all, but after a long shift, most of it in the weeds, I realized I had a fantastic time. From that day on I really wanted to get better at my craft and make the whole bar the happiest place of earth.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In NYC I was working at a place called Park Avalon. I was so slow compared to everyone else that the manager named Lou could not wait to fire me. Finally after my training I failed the test to take the floor. He fired me. The next day I went back to the same place and started the whole training again. This time without pay. He said I could only busboy, still trying to get rid of me, but I did that. I worked my way up and within a couple of months I was the best bartender that they had. I just refused to take no for an answer.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I come from a very big and successful family. Most are doctors and lawyers, so a bartender was something that was not on the level. For. a long time I took the criticism in and acknowledged it. I gave it a home. I was a little big ashamed of it since it always drew remarks. I wish I hadn’t been so hard on myself and cared what other people thought about me. I am currently working with Cardi B launching a product called Whip Shots. It is amazing to hear her stories and how life and trusting in your journey can take you to pretty amazing places.
