Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to RMthePoet . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
RMthePoet , appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I started with making hip hop beats. That’s essentially what I wanted to do before rapping. Both arts, though, took me a long time to get proficient. There are learning curves in all arts, so don’t let that make you quit! We all have to start somewhere, and I wasn’t good when I began studying music. My first piece of equipment was my beloved MPC1000 drum machine. It took me years to skillfully use that drum machine. YouTube was a crucial resource. Luckily, I’ve always had a good ear for music and an excellent sense of rhythm. You have to understand and love music to create something dope. It’s taken me years of rapping with trial and error in order to create a style that I can call my own. Then there are the life experiences that continue to influence my music.
I don’t think I would’ve been able to become the artist I am now without heaving learned to make beats first. When you know how to produce music, rap, and understand song engineering, that makes you a complete hip hop artist. This lets me handle every aspect of my work in my home studio. I studied audio engineering at MiraCosta Community College specifically for Pro Tools in order to record, mix, and master. However, like with anything, it took countless hours and days of constant grinding learning to become great at what I do. The key is to never give up! Only losers quit! Be a winner! I believe there’s no such thing as shortcuts. You have to work nonstop and put in constant hours of practice and gain life experience. That’s the only way to get better than yesterday! In this life there is no easy way out or shortcut to your goal! That goes with any mission in life!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
What’s good? My Name is RMthePoet. I rap, make beats, and work as an audio engineer. I’m from Vista, California. I’ve always had a love for music and everything related to the culture. Growing up, my grandfather was always playing a variety of instruments. That was the beginning of my wanting to do music. As time went on, I was inspired by the hip hop greats to start writing lyrics, which naturally progressed into rapping. I started to love hiphop. I wanted to make beats before rapping, but writing was a way for me to vent, so hip hop turned into a passion. It drove me to find ways to create this poetry known as hip hop over beats.
I believe what sets me apart from others is I remain the same no matter what. There’s no ego here. I stay true to myself at all times. I bring a real authentic presence into the rap scene. I flow differently and rap real shit on authentic G-funk/Boom Bap style beats. I would never sell my soul! I stand strong in what I believe in, and I won’t bow down on when it comes to things that are important to me. I believe music reflects the self. It’s an art form to vent and express what’s inside you. I work hard nonstop, because I’m driven to make something of myself. I have the right people around me that believe in me as much as I believe in them. I’m proud of just being here enjoying life, creating music that people love and listen to. I’m grateful to be here. Success can only be earned by those who are willing to sacrifice!
Although I still have a long way to go, I’m on the right path. One of my favorite moments so far in my music career has been the success of my latest album “Like We Always Do.” I never imagined that my album would’ve sold out all the way in Japan, and that my music videos earned the reach they gained. I truly feel blessed because I’ve stayed true to myself this whole time and always set out to create timeless music!
My song “Wheels Turning” off my album “Like We Always Do” was nominated for Best hip hop/rap song in the San Diego Music Awards. It’s amazing to know that when you put out dope music, work hard, and stay true to your vision great things will happen. I know I have long way to go before I truly make it in music, but so far, the ride has been amazing! Just know when you listen to my jams, you’re gonna get great rhymes, true lyricism with authentic realness, and beats that bump! California Style! To everyone who’s been supporting, I just wanna say, “Thank you!”

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
To be honest, some of the most rewarding things about being an artist is seeing people enjoying the music I make. For a moment, my listeners can escape the difficult reality they face when bumping my albums. It is rewarding to see people at my live performances react in a good way. They move with my music and appreciate real hip hop. Seeing their heads nodding back and forth, the props and love I get is some of the most rewarding shit.
When people sit back and bump it while they’re cruising, at the gym, or just at home with my music loud because they love it, that’s rewarding to me as the artist. Being acknowledged for my music, and my music being acknowledged, that is rewarding to me.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Some of the best ways to support any artist is to share their music anywhere possible, and for society to reject AI in the artistic industry as a whole. Instead, support the actual artists like myself and many others who put their heart and soul in this shit. One of the best ways to support is to make purchases directly from the artists at shows and through their online shop.
Yes, bumping our music on streaming platforms helps. I’m grateful for my online audience. But, for underground artists like me, it’s hard to earn a living off only streaming. Direct purchases allow me to keep doing what I do. Buying the album and merchandise goes directly to the artists out there grinding. That’s why I have a website. I’m trying to have everything streamlined without a middleman cutting into my hard-earned money. All my music and merch are available on my website.
I’ll still be on all digital platforms as well. If you’re bumping my music, regardless of the platform, I truly appreciate that shit. I’m trying to get my music out all over the world, no matter how or what platform it’s bumped on. I would never have gotten this far as an artist without everyone supporting me in one way or another. Thank you for the support. It’s truly appreciated.
