We caught up with the brilliant and insightful RM Connor a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
RM, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
When I was sixteen years old, I was pulled from my room by a loud noise coming from the living room Christmas Eve. I tiptoed down the stairs, and if I hadn’t known better, I would have thought it was Santa dropping off presents. Well, it wasn’t Santa per se. My mother was trying to place a huge electric typewriter under the tree and struggling to do so. We laughed about it, but it was just one instance in my life where my parents tried to encourage my creativity. I come from a conservative background, and I’ve heard conservative parents stifle their children’s creativity. But not mine. It’s quite the opposite. No matter what my passions were, my parents encouraged it. In high school, I proclaimed I wanted to be an author, and it was only when I had my daughter that I realized I might need another career path. I went to school for education but ultimately returned to my true passion: writing.
Looking back on my childhood, I remember the different moments when my interests shifted from writing stories to poetry to photography and how my parents encouraged me each time. As a parent now, I try to do the same for my kids. I like to remind them that it’s never too late to learn a new skill, to acquire a new hobby, or something that brings them joy.
I laid down my quill for many years to go through school, to have a family, but in the end, I always returned to writing. So, when I decided to pursue a writing career, the support from my parents was overwhelming.
RM, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is R.M. Connor, and I write dark fantasy books. If you enjoy the paranormal and supernatural but don’t want to be too scared, I’m your girl.
It’s a joke in my house about how I’m scared of almost everything that goes “bump in the night,” but I like to write about it. I mix in humor to help cope with the things that creep me out. So, if you are a fan of shows like Supernatural, Charmed, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, my books are for you.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a creative is when a book is finished, and I get to hold it in my hands. I have four books published and a fifth later this summer, and each time I get to hold a physical copy for the first time, I tear up. That being said, the number one reward is when I meet someone who has enjoyed my books. Knowing that my words brought someone a moment of happiness will never get old.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
When I am in the midst of writing a book, it takes over my entire brain. I am always thinking, always plotting, and sometimes (okay, a lot of times), I talk about my characters as if they’re real people. My husband has learned how to just nod and go along with it. As a writer, I am creating whole new worlds that might be similar to ours but vastly different. It can be very consuming. A writer’s brain is always coming up with something, always wondering about a scene they just finished. And when we say, “Hold on, I have to write this down,” we really need you to hold on; otherwise, we might forget.
