We were lucky to catch up with Riz Moosa recently and have shared our conversation below.

Riz, appreciate you joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.

Most other wedding DJs will play the same music at every wedding. Something we do different than most DJs is really understand the style and tastes of our couples. We help them with sharing popular music from other couples and ask them to tell us some of their favorites songs. Once we have that, we build everything around their vision. It’s very time consuming on our part but the end result is magical. No two weddings are ever the same and the couples always love the music they hear on that day. We don’t do cookie-cutter weddings and want the couples to have a unique, personal and fun experience.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

We are the largest Indian Wedding DJ company in America who specialize in South Asian and Fusion Weddings. We have done events all over America, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. People have also flown us for events in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Couples that want a fun wedding that is unique to their tastes hire us. If someone is looking for a mashup style of music that mixes music from the east and west usually find us. Every weekend we hear from guests that they have never danced this much at an event or this is the most fun they have ever had. We are constantly watching the couple and the guests to make sure everyone is having fun. Slight adjustments from our part takes a good event and makes it an unforgettable night.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.

COVID-19, the worst “C” word in the world. Like many businesses we were devastated with not being able to work and the continuous cancelations and postponements. Our full year sales in 2020 was 20% of the previous year and all of our fixed costs stayed the same. Financially we cut as much of the variable costs as we could. Seeing 100s of new faces every week to just seeing the people you live with was tough. We had to find a way to get our creative juices going. We started a weekly game show around music on Instagram and Facebook. We also did live djing on the platforms. This lead us to do multiple wedding events from our studio office while the family and friends danced at micro-weddings at home. We pushed ourselves to find ways to do what we love. Not for the money but just because we missed it so much. We feel blessed to be back doing what we love every week and entertaining people around the globe.

Have you ever had to pivot?

We started off as wedding DJs which meant DJ equipment, speakers, microphones and some basic dance lights. As our couples needs changed, so did our offerings. It started with uplights and projector and screens. We grew and learned setups and how to operate them. Next came more robust professional lighting and then special effects. During the pandemic it happened again. Our couples wanted to professionally live stream their weddings. Most videographers were not up for the challenge and we had to step up to help our couples. We learned how to setup professional backgrounds, stream to multiple platforms at the same time and how to get the best audio for the stream. It took a lot of time to figure out but the fact that we could help connect people all around the world to our couples weddings made it all worth it. There are grandparents that still weekly go back and watch some of stream online to relive their grandchildren’s weddings videos.
