Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rita Liu. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Rita , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, let’s jump into one of the most exciting parts of starting a new venture – how did you get your first client who was not a friend or family?
That’s an excellent question, especially for creative graduates. Let me tell you how I landed my first job. After finishing college, I took my parents out to dinner, but the service was terrible. A woman approached us and asked about our dining experience. I decided to be honest and shared my thoughts, instead of giving a generic response. We started chatting, and I mentioned that I was a newly graduated designer. She informed me that they were opening a new restaurant and offered me a project to design their new menu. That’s how I landed my first job, which was unique but effective. The easiest way to get hired is to share your portfolio on social media and let your friends know about your work. At the beginning of my career, I reached out to my friends and asked them to share my work. I managed to get some clients through my friends and even offered them a small commission if I got the job.
Rita , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I run a creative studio called Lemon Vision with my partner; we offer creative and marketing services to clients. We help clients tell their unique stories to the right people who love your products. Our services include branding, website creation & development, social media content creation, creative campaigns, and account management. I’m in charge of all the creative aspects of work, and my partner does all the marketing services.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I met Sheila while we were working on a project where she was the manager on the client side. Our task was to design and remodel a new retail store. Surprisingly, our communication and teamwork went smoothly. Later, I recommended Sheila to one of my clients looking for someone to manage their social accounts. Working with her was easy, and my client was impressed with her work. This led us to the idea of starting a studio together.
Finding a suitable partner can be challenging, but I am grateful to have Sheila as my partner. I had some unpleasant experiences before meeting her, which made me nervous about having a new partner. However, we still work excellently together!
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
As a designer, it is important to be able to communicate effectively with your clients. This is especially true when working with clients who come from a business background. Their way of thinking can be quite different from ours. In order to create a successful design, it is essential to understand your client’s business language and translate it into a visual representation. This means explaining every valuable detail to your client and answering their questions about what, why, and how.
For instance, last week, I had a client who wanted me to design the packaging for their vitamin products. I asked them where they would be selling their products, whether in-store or on Amazon. As designers, our job is to make the product stand out and catch the customer’s eye. Understanding the client’s sales channels helps us to add the right visual elements to make the product more appealing and attractive to potential customers.
