Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rita Dixon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Rita , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you scale up? What were the strategies, tactics, meaningful moments, twists/turns, obstacles, mistakes along the way? We’d love to hear the backstory the illustrates how you grew the firm
Scaling up has been a gradual journey that has allowed me to balance a family and a career. It’s a journey that started with a notion, an idea and a dream. I asked myself. Can you do it? Do you have what it takes? Will you succeed? Honestly, one half of me answered absolutely and the other half answered maybe not. Will there be enough clients to walk through the doors? I opened the practice about six months after having my first child. After experiencing the crazy balancing act that all new working mothers experience, I decided that it would be a good time to step out on faith to achieve better flexibility and work life balance. In between breastfeeding and pumping and trying to figure out the crazy ride of learning how to be a parent, I knew all I needed to open the practice was an email, phone number and a website. I got to work and then began networking. What I learned early on in networking was that if I did not speak up and passionately advocate for my business then who would. Second, I deduced that networking is most beneficial when you form genuine relationships with other individuals or businesses in which you both can support one another. Third, I figured out rather quickly that as a business owner you just have to hustle.
I know that it is a privilege to be able to serve in an honest way so that my clients are able to navigate effectively through the legal system. However, in order for clients to truly feel supported, it is important to have a supportive team. Building a supportive team is key to ultimate success. As my business expanded, I knew I needed more assistance which meant building a team. I slowly added new team members along with the growth of the business. Now, I am working to solidify the vision for the firm understanding that adjustments and tweaks are an everyday part of running your own business. I know that there is always room to improve, change and climb to new heights.
Rita , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The firm is a Christian law firm that focuses on family, probate and personal injury law. The family law practice encompasses adoption, child custody, child support and divorce cases as well as modifications of child related orders and enforcing the implantation of orders. We also handle pre-nuptial agreements (pre-marital agreements), marital agreements and surrogacy agreements. The probate side of the practice includes estate planning and also probate administration cases. Estate planning includes educating individuals on the important estate planning instruments and working with them to execute a plan that works best for him or her and that individual’s family. Estate planning packages may include the following documents: Last Will and Testament and/or Trust, Medical Power of Attorney, Statutory Durable Power of Attorney, HIPAA Authorization, Declaration of Guardian (Adult and Child), Directive to Physicians (Living Will) and Appointment of Disposition of Remains. Probate administration may be needed when an individual passes away and the family needs to handle the business of that person’s estate. This may occur if assets need to be collected and properly distributed to heirs or if debts of the estate need to be paid. We also will partner with individuals to get the compensation they deserve after experiencing injuries due to truck wrecks and car wrecks.
Our hope is that each client is provided professional and compassionate service. We strive to gain the client’s trust by honest communication and good solid results. It is no coincidence that attorneys are also referred to as counselors because we have the ability to sift through a multitude of legal issues, identify and separate the matters with the relevant law and coach the client through the legal process. What I most want clients to know is that we truly do care about each client and we are invested in the success of each case.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The firm has built a strong referral base through the years. The highest compliment is having former and current clients send over referrals. In addition to client referrals, the firm receives clientele through google searches and other colleagues.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe being professional in all aspects of the business as well as being open to help and share knowledge with colleagues has built the reputation of the firm in the legal community.
